Thoughts Between These Two 5164?

https://www.europeanwatch.com/watch/...r-F-38660.html

https://www.europeanwatch.com/watch/...ber-39051.html

I saw both of these 5164 at a local dealer. There's a few months difference but a decent price difference. I'm curious if folks notice any difference in quality if there's been a polish etc? Thanks.

While both appear to have been polished at least once, the second (2015) piece definitely looks to be in better condition, aesthetically speaking. You can see some nicks on the 2014 piece they still remain after the polish, the flat part of the bezel looks noticeably thinner, and the transition between the brushed and polished surfaces isn’t as sharp in that one. But man those prices these days are high…I got my 5164r earlier this year, an unworn 2020 dated piece, and that was even cheaper than either of these….

It is a joke that EWC misleadingly describe most of their watches as "Like New", including these two 5164s. Buyer beware. The 2014 one looks awful and has been overpolished in a bad way. The 2015 one has also been polished quite a bit but it is better.

I'd stay clear and pay up for truly mint / NOS condition if you are planning to spend 100 grand for a pretty basic Patek sports watch.

Oh to add…the brushing on the case back of the 2014 piece is just straight rather than radial…proof that the polish was done by someone other than patek who has no idea how these pieces should be polished….

Thanks everyone, very helpful and informative. The aquanaut market seems to be full of examples such as the above. Here's another that's listed as unworn, but seems to look just like the two listed above?

I do not trust pre-owned or grey dealers.

I like this one a lot better than the 2014 one from EWC and I'd also pick it over their 2015 one. The table lists the condition as Good (probably a mistake) as it says unworn everywhere else. I'd call Michael Ashton to discuss if I was interested.

I’d guess many have been a bit beaten up

For me at the time I got mine discounted and it was a relatively inexpensive sports watch steel on rubber meant to be used and enjoyed

I did just that. Thing is indestructible and I wouldn’t be least bit worried abt a few nicks

I have heard that Michael Ashton is one of the trusted seller, he has a lot of pre-owned timepieces on his website, but his price seems to be on the high side.
