Hi Everyone

This is my first post on these forums. I have a Rolex Explorer II (not sure the year or model right now as I don't have the paperwork in front of me and I have had for well over ten years).

About two months ago I noticed that the ticking had stopped witht he watch (I kept it on a watch winder when not in use). I found this odd because it was being wound on the winder, so I take the Rolex out and wind it, give it a couple of shakes, and the second hand tries to advance but just sticks (you can see it trying to advance but it doesn't). If I wind it a little more, the second hand will actually begin to go backward for about ten seconds and then stop.

Right now I am a little low on funds so I am waiting on getting it serviced, most likely after the tax season, but I was wondering if anyone on here had any similar experiences with their watch and if so could you lend some insight as to what is going on with my watch?

I have been lurking for a little while looking at all the awesome watches on here, and finally decided that I need to be proactive about getting my Explorer II back into working order. I miss it. And I don't like the Movado replacement I am wearing until the Rolex is fixed.

Your mainspring has likely broken......

Time to take it in and have that replaced....

Is that going to mean a costly repair? I am not too familiar with the movements of a Rolex watch, so just looking for some insight from you guys.

You are in NYC home of Rolex USA. If you take it to them it will cost over $500 as they will want to do a complete overhaul. You can take it to a non Rolex repair shop but any parts that they replace will most likely not be genuine Rolex as Rolex does not sell parts to third party repair shops.

I had the same problem in a Sub no date I purchased in 1992. I had to send it in for service twice to correct the problem. The funniest part was the AD told me not to fix it because it was so unique it would be a " collectors item". I was dumbfounded!!

Thanks for the info. I was afraid that was going to be the answer I was going to get. I was going to go through Wingates for repair because I have heard good things about them and they have serviced other non-Rolex watches of mine. But now I am thinking that it might be better to go through Rolex instead. I was not aware that if I took I an independant shop they would use non Rolex parts. I don't really want a 5000$ bastardized Rolex lol.

Thanks for the help guys. Next stop is Rolex USA I suppose. 500$ is going to hurt but I know it is worth it for such a great timepiece :)

Thanks for the info guys. I was going to go with Wingates as they have serviced my no -Rolex watches but I was not aware that they use non-genuine parts. So I will probably go through Rolex for piece of mind. I don't really want to bastardized my 5000$ Rolex with non-genuine parts.

Going through Rolex is going to cost more bu it is worth it for piece of
mind. Thank you also for giving estimates on repair costs as I am not familiar with the costs to repair these awesome timepieces. It was due for service anyway. Does anyone know the typical wait tome to fix and get the watch back to me?

Again thanks for all the advice and answers. I am sure you get these kinds of questions all the time. I guess it is a good thing I live in NYC!!!

It depends on how busy they are.. I would expect 3 to 5 weeks turn-around time...

It's nice to be able to just drop it off though, rather than adding extra time with shipping......

Very true. Any estimates on how much this is goin to cost me? I know 500 plus is a good guideline. Just want to get an idea of what my total bill might be. Being a Masters student does not really offer significant income levels. But I am willing to go into debt to get my Rolex going again. I miss wearing it soooooo much!!!!!

Rolex does a service on a watch on a "flat rate", plus any unexpected parts..

The flat rate I believe is about 550, so that would likely be the total cost unless you elected to have the dial and hands changed, the crown, or other out of the ordinary parts issues...

In the past, expendables that are included are the great wheel, pallet and jewels, mainspring, rotor axle, all gaskets...a few others I cant recall, and the case and bracelet is refinished to like-new standards...

The watch comes back looking and performing pretty much as new, with a fresh 1 year warranty.........

I am what you might call an Independant watchmaker and I use all original Rolex parts. There are about 3 to 400 of us left in the US with Rolex parts accounts. My service starts at 350 which includes clean oil adjust detail gaskets and watertest mainspring would be an additional 35 dollars. Turn around is approx. 7 to 10 days after exceptance of estimate. www.timecareinc.com thanx Rikki
