When I read your post I thought you were 20.. You are asking about that matter in the wrong forum. It is like I ask in a Ducati Forum, should I buy a Ducati? Keep in your mind that you wear it for free, since it has cash value. On the other hand, if you invest the 12K somewhere else you will probably make money..

Rolex is the cheapest watch on the planet, even more than a Casio, you buy it, made of steel, you use it and sell it with no loss or very little after having it for years on your wrist.
Do you have 50 already, no much time more to think about it, do it. |

I didn't know the bloke so didn't bite but said quietly; "my Dad gave it to me the day before he died" Not true, but the silence 'round the table and the look on his face was absolutely priceless. My beautiful wife gently chided me in the car on the way home. My father passed 20 years ago. We did laugh though. |

The answer is NO, you're not a jerk for wanting it. You actually sound like an intelligent, thoughtful person - weighing all the pro's and con's of this decision. Like you, I was kind of sensitive to the notion of wearing a watch that costs more than some peoples cars, but keep in mind most people don't know what a Rolex actually costs, they just know it's "expensive" and a nice watch. So, some of the things you are worried about, may not actually be concerns for others.
But if you want it, and you can afford it, I say buy it. You only live once dude. And remember, it will hold its value so if you need to sell it, you won't have a hard time getting most of your money back. |

No you're not a jerk. Your money, your choices.
Sure a $10 casio might tell better time than a Rolex... but I feel 1000000x better wearing a Rolex than wearing a Casio. People buy emotions, not things. Among the many other reasons why I own a Rolex, I like the way I feel when I wear a Rolex, therefore I'd rather wear one of these than a Casio. TLDR; if it makes YOU happy, buy it |

Please see responses inline:
my Dad will see it and say "Rich guys always wear Casios, so what are you?" Not correct. My Buffet wears a Rolex - my brother will say "your phone has a clock...what a waste of $" Nope. Not a waste. You will get your $ back in few years. - my wife says "get it.. but you'll grow tired of it in a year and sell it" Has she sold her diamond ring? - my Ironman friend will say "my $600 Fenix does 100x more than your Rolex" Get better friends. - I will hide it under my jacket on the subway Get insurance - I will never dive past 40 feet, and probably won't wear it diving anyhow. Nobody does.

Buy it. Forget the external noise. If it is within your means, you have afforded yourself the right to purchase it. Your friend being out of work is not your fault. Your dad and wife's opinions are moot.
Secondly, get insurance on it and wear it wherever the hell you want. These are tool watches meant to experience life with you. |

Everyone values things differently. Some people like to spend on cars, travel, hobbies, art, etc. It's your money, you do what makes you happy. Who cares what anyone else thinks or says. We can be critical of how anyone spends their money but as long as they're doing so responsibly (e.g. don't buy things at the expense of what's important in life), then it's none of anyone's business.
Also, a Rolex is almost like holding cash. Yes, you get some slight depreciation and you're not earning interest/returns on that money. However, it's not like buying a first class plane ticket where the money vanishes permanently after you've experienced the trip. It's an assert, it'll always be worth a fair percentage of what you've paid, so the TCO isn't the full value of the watch. YOLO |

Congratulations!!! Glad you got what you wanted!!! A great way to spend some money on something that will hold its value. It could cost less than the brand X in the long run (when your kids retire).

Get that SD43 ( MK1 dial preferably ) and enjoy the hell out of it. I wear mine proudly even though I’ve had plenty of comments about snobbery and money wasting etc.
