The name ‘Grand Seiko’

This probably won’t go down well with a lot of you, but here goes anyway...

I wore a Seiko Kinetic for 20 years, I loved it. It was reliable, and full of priceless memories. Till I dropped and broke it, and the repair I was quoted took too long because of the need to wait for parts.

So I didn’t wear a watch for some years till I bought a Tudor BB58, which I adore.

But I still have a soft spot for Seiko. Not just for nostalgia, but because they make really fantastic watches.

But I really dislike the name Grand Seiko. It’s so ... long? And possibly not befitting of watches that cost much more than the ... average Seiko?

Toyota understood that and called Lexus.. Lexus, not Grand Toyota. And it is such a pity I feel, because I feel Grand Seiko has such huge potential.

I'm proud of the Seiko on my wrist. If you want to impress others, wear Rolex.

Grand Seiko name does not phase me. If it is a good watch, I’ll buy it.

The name isn't that much of an issue, especially since they re-dialed the watches. In fact, I think there's almost a stronger argument that current Grand Seiko dials--especially the 9F quartz--almost have too little writing on the dials. By comparison, my Pelagos has a novel written on the dial. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Before there was Lexus, there was the Toyota Century.

I like the grand seiko name due to the history associated with it.

The name ‘Grand Seiko’

I guess this guy should close up shop...

As should Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Van Cleef & Arpels - just too long of a name...

Naturally I’m just kidding - but really a small grain of truth.

If the length of the brand’s name mattered, then IWC and Rado would own the market.

I think they would have been better off rebranding away from Seiko. But in a way I like it because it's true to the heritage of Seikosha.

I wonder if the early successes, including recently in the US, of GS would have been as likely if they chose some random name. I assume they had focus groups and decided to stay w GS. Personally, I probably would have been more hesitant w my purchase.

Stop and just think about that for one moment!
How much is the luxury car market worth?
How many people buy cars?
How many Billions is spent on conceptualising & bringing a new model to market?
How much is spent on advertising to the target demographic?

Sure, Seiko could’ve chisen a new name – but then what about their history where two separate arms of the company tried to outdo each other with the King Seiko and Grand Seiko, repevtively.

If, upon further contemplation, you still can’t reconcile the name, then simply forget that Grand Seiko exists, and just enjoy the cheaper Seikos from the Presage & Prospex range, which offer terrific value.
Alternatively, look at the Credor models – but you’ll need to import them from Japan (more often than not), or the discontinued Ananta line.
You’re not exactly short of choice.

I like the name Grand Seiko more than Credor or Presage, but not as much as King Seiko, Seikomatic or Lord Marvel. Sadly those three are no longer with us.

Any Seiko stands for quality and a amazing history. Probably the most innovative brand out there. Grand Seiko even more so.

I have never really thought about liking or disliking it. I see no issues with the name and as I have become more aware of the brand and actually became an owner I really like it. Move past the name and check out the watch.

Ok!
So first off, Grand Seiko watches are 100% manufactured in their home country- right down to the screws. Most high end Swiss brands boast this to .
GS finishing and attention to detail rivals (in some cases exceeds) those high end Swiss brands, at less then half the price.
So Grand Seiko has earned its name- absolutely!

Now secondly; technically, to me, Grand Seiko is the original Seiko- because GS is wholly manufactured in Japan- it has the strongest ties to Seiko history.
Today’s “regular “ Seikos , even most presage and prospex , cannot make that claim ; they are manufactured in Japanese owned factories abroad.
So, just for the sake of this discussion, maybe “regular “Seikos should have been renamed.
Just a thought...
