I use nist.time.gov.

Cell phones are notoriously bad. On some networks the time is close, others are off by well over a minute. It seems unbelievable that this should be the case, but it's true.

In the SF Bay Area, my iPhone is currently 40 seconds off after doing an auto-update from the network. They should use an NTP server or the built-in GPS receiver instead.

In front the computer - www.time.gov. In the morning I look at the atomic clock in my bathroom (one in the kitchen is a traditional dial - no second hand. I check my daily watch everyday before going downstairs to leave for work.

Is time.gov based on an atomic clock?

Also, what has happened with the USNO? I've used that for some time, but now the time display won't load.

Yes. It's based in Colorado. Don't know about USNO.

That's your computer's clock. It can be way off by the time it resets once weekly.

My computer's offset is shown below. It will update tomorrow night.

http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com I use this, but i only use it when setting a watch that has stopped due to the power reserve running down. In normal day-to-day i don't mind being a little off, although i do sometimes check it daily just for something to do and to keep an eye on it.

When clicked on the link it told me it was 2007. The rest was correct. But meaning it is -7 years. Lot less accurate then my Rolex

It's also off by at least nine seconds.

Time.gov or USNO.

as a kid and ham radio enthusiast in the late 60 s , that round the clock sleep inducing droning tic toc tic toc tic toc was mesmerizing ....until ..." di-Dah-Dah ! ...di -Dah - Dah !....di- di- di- Dah !" woke you up !

what the tics and tocs actually are transmitting :

from wikipedia

" WWV transmits audio "ticks" once per second, to allow for accurate manual clock synchronization. These ticks are always transmitted, even during voice announcements and silent periods. Each tick begins on the second, lasts 5 ms and consists of 5 cycles of a 1000 Hz sine wave. To make the tick stand out more, all other signals are suppressed for 40 ms, from 10 ms before the second until 30 ms after (25 ms after the tick). As an exception, no tick (and no silent interval) is transmitted at 29 or 59 seconds past the minute. In the event of a leap second, no tick is transmitted during second 60 of the minute, either.

On the minute, the tick is extended to a 0.8 second long beep, followed by 0.2 s of silence. On the hour, this minute pulse is transmitted at 1500 Hz rather than 1000. The beginning of the tone corresponds to the start of the minute.

Between seconds one and sixteen inclusive past the minute, the current difference between UTC and UT1 is transmitted by doubling some of the once-per-second ticks, transmitting a second tick 100 ms after the first. (The second tick preempts other transmissions, but does not get a silent zone The absolute value of this difference, in tenths of a second, is determined by the number of doubled ticks. The sign is determined by the position: If the doubled ticks begin at second one, UT1 is ahead of UTC; if they begin at second nine, UT1 is behind UTC."

got it ? simple .

WWV through a vintage receiver ...missing the morse code of the old days, though :

Same as most...

http://time.gov/HTML5/

It is NIST time. National Institute of Standards and Testing. The official time as far as I know.

I use this Rapport Atomic Clock (same guys that make the watch winders), picked it up off eBay for about £15 earlier this year.
It’s from the Eighties I believe, a solid piece of wood, very cool & retro looking. Uses a couple of AA batteries & doesn’t miss a beat

I love those broadcasts and used to listen to the incessantly in the background. I can even recite the announcement from memory, even though I don't listen to it much anymore since the advent of the 60khz clocks and the internet.

The voice is now computerized, but I still like it.

I live in the NY area and rely on public transit a lot so my watches need to be fairly accurate...even though NJT isn't always!

I use the Emerald app on my iPhone.
