Bill of Sale from Grey Sellers

Morning guys,

Quick question. When buying from a grey seller, should they generate a bill of sale so the transaction is recorded? Or is a complete set with warranty card enough for you? I purchased a few times through grey and never received a bill of sale. Only thing recorded is email / text correspondence.

Thoughts?

I have and have not depending on the seller. They should, upon request, if they are a large seller.

Think with most of them you will get a bill of sale if you ask for one. Having one important for insurance of the watch

I have dealt with gray dealers that have and have not.

Even some of the biggest grays dont give a trade/sell receipt. I never really cared.

What does a receipt do for you? Your credit card statement would be far more valuable proof than a receipt.

You get a till receipt when you buy groceries from your local supermarket, and a store selling watches is just that a store that sell watches. So like any business selling any commodity you should have a receipt but no big deal if you dont, and a email or text conformation of payment will act like a bill of sale.

Usually your credit card statement just records the business and amount. It doesn't list or describe the item. You need the actual bill for insurance. At least I did.

That’s interesting, in my experience most insurance only requires proof of ownership and they will use MSRP for valuation

You need to know where you are buying from. A true Grey Seller is a legitimate business and you will indeed get a bill of sale, just like any other business. A used Dealer with a shop/business will also provide receipts.

If you are talking about re-sellers and flippers on the 'Net, some of them don't even have a business license. A receipt from one of these wouldn't be much good for anything.

Just ask for one. Can't imagine why anyone would say "no"

Any legitimate business should be providing you with an invoice/BOS.

I have been using the same Grey for 10 years. I always ask for a bill of sale as well as a appraisel. This way I can get it insured asap.
