Hi everyone,

Long time lurker. Have been showed some pictures of this (potentially for sale) vintage submariner and was wondering what everyone thought? The owner says it is a 1977 model, and has been sitting in a drawer for 25 years.

Thanks,
Ed

Great patina, but oh, those poor crown guards have been polished to death. The rest of the case doesn't look too bad, but I'd want to see better photos. Presumably all of the scratches are only on the crystal, which is not a big deal, but you'd also need to get better and clear photos of the dial to make sure.

What's the beginning of the serial number and the asking price?

Weird it looks so scratched having been (1) polished extensively and aggressively; (2) sitting in a drawer for 25 years. That said, great looking piece depending on price.

The drawer must be full of sand and dirt.

Looks to be what the seller is stating but agree- polished aggressively on the crown guards but oddly the lugs look to be acceptable... Kind of a big deal on the CGs though. Price is right do it..

The clasp and maybe the whole band is counterfeit.

Let's do the math.

2017 less 25 years in drawer = stored (or set aside) since 1992.

From 1977 to 1992 (15 years of regular use) the watch took a beating.

Well the hands and dial look very nice under that crystal. Appears to be a lovely patina Mk 1 Maxi dial, which is correct for a 1977 serial around 5 mil. If the price is appropriate for the condition I would pick it up and after a sympathetic cleaning, it should look great. Will it ever be a museum piece, no, but it probably shouldn't be since it's 40 years old.

Yep. That's what I was trying to say. I believe this watch would need a talented specialist to be brought to life in perfect condition, so the price must be a real bargain to make the OP think about it.

The dial and hands are the only parts this watch is worth for.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the input. The seller says the watch is a 5,290,000 serial number. He also hasn't offered a price for purchasing, a few mentioned that if I could get at a 'good' price it would be ok due to the sub-stantial (get it?) wear on the crown guards. What would be a good price?

For me, $5-6k, knowing it'll need a talented restoration.

I wouldn't buy at any price. You'll never be able to do anything with those polished-down crown guards, unless you're talking about laser welding/rebuilding the case, and that would kill the collectibility, for me anyway.

With that much gunk on the case and bracelet, I wonder if it was found while metal detecting
