15450: Yellow Gold or Stainless?

Hi folks,

In the market for a new 15450 but I'm torn between the stainless or YG version. Price is a consideration, but only a small one. That said, I can get a bigger discount on the YG over stainless. Stainless is going to be at retail, like most high-end stainless these days.

The YG one looks absolutely delicious, a real show stopper, but worried about its overall versatility and durability. Stainless looks rugged and tough, yet still elegant and understated; a versatile king. I also don't have to baby it as much.

To throw a wrench into the mix: just wait for the new 38mm ROC?

I vote for YG with blue dial. What's the typical, if any, discount on precious metal for AP? What's your wrist size? perhaps try 41mm too?

if you want the 37-38mm size style of watch and not 41mm, id definitely go for the new 38mm chrono's. If not, the 37mm blue dial steel variant. You can get a gold variant but id suggest going grey to save some $$ Goodluck

If you can spring for the gold, then go for it and don't look back. It's a show stopper. No regrets.

Yellow Gold based on your collection and beauty of AP YG, I tried one on recently it was lighter colored than the pics. If money starts becoming a bigger issue don't be afraid to flip a piece or two from the bottom half of your list for this beauty.

I have the SS 15450 Blue but if money were not an issue I'd go with the YG Blue. You have enough SS pieces already

How about the new 38mm chrono in gold?
Personally i'm going for steel one but that kind of combines your gold bracelet + 38mm chrono options?
just suggestion

Or maybe go with YG 15450 and stainless 38mm ROC in a few years? Haha

You stole my 15300 photo! 4th photo from the top.

Just a heads up that that's not a 15450! It's 39mm like a 15202, as opposed to 37mm. My wrist is 7" for reference.

As far as what you are looking for, do you really want a gold piece or not? Are you into gold in general? Would you wear it regularly or just a special occasion piece? For me, I like gold but it's loud and I know I wouldn't wear it often.

Tough call. I have RG and ST 15400s and love both, but must admit that the ST gets way more wear.

The gold piece is either very formal or very casual - and doesn’t play very well with the suits that I wear most of the time

$$$’s no issue?

Not sure I like HOW it is being worn in that pix.

But that YG blue dial in the first pix. 10/10.

YG for sure.
You’ve got enough SS in your collection already also if I was buying a top brand it’ll have to be a PM.

I too would vote YG, but think its your choice as to whether you prefer a yellow or silver colour metal. I myself prefer yellow. In addition the YG goes so well with the blue dial.

However, things to consider are:

Duability, as it will be more scratch prone, but if you're careful with your watches this shouldn't be an issue.

Weight, it will be heavier and in my view need to be worn snuggly to avoid moving around and becoming irritating.

Visibility, the RG will be a lot more hi-viz than the SS.

I have an RG Chrono on blue rubber strap which I've been contemplating putting on a bracelet, as I know it will be spectacular. However, I'm hesitant in that at the moment its relatively low viz and a watch I can wear pretty much anywhere without it shouting, but if its on a bracelet it will be transformed into a very loud shouty piece!

Gold. At 1st the gold may seem blingy, but once you wear it, it becomes natural. In normal settings and lighting, the gold seems to become more muted. And then there's the weight.....

in my opinion, full YG with bracelet at 37mm is not very blingy at all. i used to have the classic president at 36mm in yellow gold, loved that piece...but ended up ‘upgrading’ to the 15450BA. and to me, the 36mm president in YG is as classic as they come....and i don’t consider the stance of the RO to be that far off.

i think if it were a 15400 or ROC 41mm in full gold bracelet, we’re talking showtime level bling. but at 37mm, i think it is very versatile to be elegantly beautiful rather than glitzy.

a few more selling shots...

Are here any other gold pieces you’re considering?

I’m hopefully getting the blue 15450 in steel soon and my gold watch will be a Daytona.

With as many steel pieces you have though a gold 15450 would work! The yellow gold really makes the blue dial pop.

I am also thinking of getting the 15450 in SS. So, obviously I vote for the SS.

Tried the gold thing with several Rolexes references.

Loved the heft. Loved the hue of the metal. But felt that it grabbed too much attention. But with the 15450, there are a lot of brushed surfaces compared to a Rolex. So, it might not be as blingy.
