Patek 5712 help

Looking at spending around $30 k on a 5712. Do I go older/newer? S/s or white gold ? rubber or leather? (as the actress said to the bishop).

I had originally been looking at a 5146g or 5396g but the Nautilus really grew on me as I was searching. I guess I find it hard to spend $30 k on a s/s and rubber watch.

All thoughts welcome (except the member who tells me to do my own research everytime I ask a question!)

That was me, and a simple Google search of "Patek Philippe" and "Tiffany" would have told you everything you wanted to know.

I favour the 5712 steel because of the blue dial. I also have a 5146G, so our tastes are similar.

I had a 5712R Nautilus and traded it for a 5980/1A nautilus simply because I like a thicker/ hefty watch and the fact that it's on a bracelet, I can go swimming/shower etc...

The 5712 is best in SS, the bracelet makes it a pleasure to wear

5712 in SS out of the two would be my choice. What else is currently in your stable of watches?

You should be able to get a new 5712 in steel for around 30k. The steel version is a little sportier and more versatile. In PM, I would go with the RG version over the WG.

I owned a 5712G on leather....and although I did love the watch, I feel like it is much better suited in this rendition on a bracelet.

That being said, if there was a RG 5712, I would probably be very attracted.

5712 or 5164 would be my top 2 at that price.

I would choose 5712 but I'm biased. Ive had mine for over 1 year and no regrets. Hope to see your incoming coon!

I picked up a 5712R about 10 months ago. IMHO, it depends on the current state of collection and personal taste. If it's going to be your one and only Nautilus, get the SS version. If not, then it is truly debatible. Straps can be as comfortable as bracelets and both can be uncomfortable as well. I wouldn't consider the WR difference between the two on a practical level, or any level. Moon phases, date dial, small seconds, power reserve... a great Nautilus in any metal.

Caution, if you do choose the 5712 SS, DO NOT try on the 5711 later!

Is it poss to elaborate? I think your saying that the simple dial and the blue is stunning on the 5711 (complications on 5712 hide the blue magic a bit)

Reason I ask is that im waiting for a 5711 but still considering the 5712 instead! Back and forth etc and nobody has them in stock making the choice a headache (nice headache lol) :)

I know a few people who got a 5711 and sold it for a 5712 and are very happy, but none who sold a 5712 to get the 5711, don't think there is any risk of wanting a 5711 if you have the 5712...

I have a 5712g that I bought while I stand on the wait list for a 5712 SS. I really like having a precious metal piece that is so discreet. However, for me, the purpose of the 5712 was to have a great daily driver, casual piece from Patek and I find that the 5712g just has the wrong juxtaposition of sports watch on dressy strap.

So, my preference has always been for the SS version, and I was even fair enough to test drive the white gold version which just reaffirmed my thoughts.

One other comment: I find that in very direct and bright light (even artificial light) the grey dial can be prohibitively reflective when you look at the dial.

I agree. I have the 5712 steel, and would much rather have an AP Jumbo blue dial than a 5711.

Funds aren't unlimited, however, so I'm shooting for a second Journe instead of either.
