Strategy on Buying a Modern SS Daytona

I agree with you on that. While I was up at the AD buying the Blue Sky they had a brand new one selling for less than the Sky D. I almost caved and bought that instead. Not only is it undervalued it's got solid gold in the bracelet and on the bezel as opposed to only SS which to me makes it worth more (and apparently to Rolex as their MSRP indicates).

As someone who's agonized over the TT vs SS value, I'll admit it's irrational on my part, but I would always go SS no matter the price differential, as TT is just not my thing. It's too flashy for my lifestyle, and I just think TT is a look that was trendy in decades past. It works for other people though and I don't disparage people for going TT - my mother is looking to buy a TT Datejust and I'm enabling her.

However, when SS prices are creeping into full PM territory, that's when I take a real step back. I don't do YG or RG, but quite a few of the full WG Daytonas are looking very attractive compared to the SS. While I really like the WG Oysterflex and can get one for a relatively small difference compared to grey SS DaytonaC prices, I'm not sure about buying a Rolex without the Oyster bracelet. Whereas the bracelet WG Daytonas don't have a ceramic bezel yet.

But if Rolex puts out a bracelet WG Daytona with ceramic bezel out at Basel 2018... all bets are off.

(Hence, I've decided to shelve the idea of paying the exhorbitant prices for a 116500 for now.)

I have to agree it's a tempting alternative! Haven't tried on the OysterFlex bracelet yet so that was an impediment for me in the choice. I also doubt the long term durability of appearance of rubber on a metal frame or not.

If I really wanted one, I think I’d just bite the bullet and pay the premium.
It’s been a year, the hype hasn’t died down, production hasn’t ramped up.
Big Rolex likes that the Daytona is hard to get and has some flair.
So that leaves waiting, possibly years, or just accepting the markup as the current market price.
My local dealer said I could get one, but expect it to take a couple years.
2+ years waiting for a watch? No way.

PS the only reason this is a problem is that probably 70% of the names on the waiting list are opportunists looking to immediately flip it for an easy $2-3k.

That's a strategy for not buying, I believe.

Who is your AD? I walked in and got a white Daytona C from my AD in your area about a month ago.

Bottom line is that, if you're not a preferred customer at an AD, you are unlikely to get one anytime soon. If you are a preferred customer, ask and they'll probably get you one within a month.
