How do I decide? First Rolex.

I’m in the market for my first Rolex purchase, but with the shortage in most all models recently, how am I supposed to decide on a watch?

I’ve been reading the forum for the past 8 months or so, and the advice I constantly see is, “buy what sings to you.” I know first hand how pictures and real life elicit completely different emotions. I thought for sure I wanted the Exp II polar, but when I went in and tried it on, the black blew it out of the water for me.

Ideally I’d like to try on some of the other models that have caught my eye (BLNR, GMT LN, Sub ND, SD43) before deciding.

Any recommendations, besides just waiting this out? I’m in no rush, but reading this forum does not help my patience at all.

As a side note, I’d be completely happy with the Exp II black, as it truly did amaze me. It’s definitely more my style, though I work in business attire so the DJ41 is also an option. The fluted, jubilee, rhodium was stunning. I just don’t want buyers remorse if I see another model in the flesh a few months down the road that I didn’t have the chance to compare to originally.

Since I know how everyone loves pictures, here’s a few from my recent visits.

And for good measure I stopped by a local AD today, and they of course had nothing in stock besides a few Milaguass and Yachmasters. But I tried on the DJ41, fluted, jubilee, black and I have to say, I’m digging it more than the rhodium. Sorry no pics.

This is a great forum.

Cheers!

As long as you are patient, things will go well, you’ll find something you like. But be persistent, try on as many as you can.
And while it’s not necessarily buyers remorse, you will always see something else that catches your fancy, get used to that.
Enjoy the search, it’s part of the fun

When you go into an AD, after you spend some time chatting them up and it is clear there are no SS to buy, gently ask if they have something in the back that you can try on or see in the flesh.

After you post a bit here, you could also try to arrange a meet up where you can see some of the watches, and members might even let you slip them on.

I agree with your thought that you have to buy what “sings to you”. As you said, you work in business attire so I’d encourage you to look at a classic DJ as your first Rolex...especially if you anticipate buying a #2 or more.

The DJ is more versitile with business or sport attire. Then when you add your next Rolex, go with something in the PM line.

Just my .02 but probably worth less than that...

Enjoy your purchase!

i would try to find a secondary dealer with a store. Its the only way you are going to be able to try them all on. Otherwise its going to be a long time waiting for an AD to call about each one. They have stock and i have no issues using them to try on watches.

If Rolexes are special to you, then you need to get one that will stand the test of time best. I suggest you give yourself 6 months to a year to fully decide. You’ll lose big money with buyers remorse. Look at those old ads from the 60s to 90s. Every Rolex has a different theme and stereotypes.

You can buy whatever you like on the grey market - DavidSW was my choice. Often, buying out of state and from a grey dealer will be cheaper than with CA state and local taxes. Now if you decide you want a super hot watch like a Pepsi or Daytona, that’s going to cost you.

My concern is how do I even know what is “special” to me unless I’m able to try on the different models? Sounds like I just need patience as I picked a bad time to be looking for my first.

Head to a grey market dealer / pre-owned and try them all on side by side.

Then wait for the call.

Well, the black dial kept calling my name. Such a beautiful watch.

Celebrated with some green label.

Congrats. Great choice. I bought the same watch but later flipped it for a DJ2 rhodium dial. I always have had and loved black dial watches. But it’s funny how when a watch sings to you it’s magic. I have no regrets about my trade. I get more complements and it puts a smile on my face every time I look at it. If you ever decide to flip it on the future look at DavidSW. He is great.

Thanks. I almost went rhodium. Great looking watch.

Great choice!!!

I read the first post and I was going to answer DJ when I scrolled down and saw that you got one.
Best all around Rolex you can get imo. Especially, if you work in business attire.
Congrats and enjoy that sucker!
