Datejust 41 vs Explorer II

I want to buy both, a blue faced DJ (probably a flutted Bezel with oyster bracelet), and an explorer II in black for a more practical non-work and holiday watch

I can only afford one at the moment :(

Which one is better in terms of resale ease and depreciation do you guys think ?

Its not the most important issue for a decision, but one I just find myself pondering at the moment considering the market, and changes to Rolex attitude and production

Neither are the best from a resale perspective. I’d suggest go with what you like the most and you will get way more enjoyment than trying to determine a future resale value and maybe ending up with what you don’t really want.

I think datejust if you dress up for work at all. I also think you can get a DJ at a reasonable discount from an AD right now.

I think in general Rolex sport watches have a better market than semi-dressy watches. But you picked the most want it dial on the semi-Dressy watches , and not precisely the most hunted sport watch on the sport side. So I’ll say that market wise they are similar in demand.
So in this case you can get first whichever you collection is lacking the most first.
Good luck

I lean towards the sport models which better compliment my lifestyle. If you buy right, both are pretty similar in the secondary market.

interesting

I was also thinking that Rolex will probably always make a fluted DJ but if the Explorer III has a new mechanism, a difference size or a ceramic bezel it will probably hose the Explorer II price. On the other hand the Explorer II is a more practical watch, more of a lifestyle watch as mentioned above, has the GMT which actually is useful, and I wouldn't take the DJ on holiday - its too much of a thief magnate from a distance

decisions decisions ....

They both hold value resonably well. Buy the one you like forget what we think for the sake of a few hundred quid.

Mind you if you are primarily concerned over resale be patient make loads of calls every day and in 6 months you will have a submariner date. In the last year i have seen 2 at AD's

Datejust 41 vs Explorer II

Anytime I see re-sale value as a consideration in the decision process - I suggest going back to the drawing board and trying to decide what you really want.

Modern watches are not investments - and don’t settle for something you don’t want. I just costs more $$ in the long run.

They've both very different to me. I went for the Exp. II Polar,. I did try on my favorite DJ41, a smooth on oyster, silver face. Fit and looked perfect, l was actually a little stunned by it. Maybe down the road..

I have both the references to which you refer. A blue dial fluted DJ2, obviously on oyster because that’s all they ever shipped with, and a black dial 42mm Exp 2.
The most versatile of the two I would say is the Exp 2. Only because it is a very handsome watch in a suit for instance and blends in well as a casual weekend watch. Some will say the DJ does this as well, but the fluted bezel is quite flashy and dressy and screams Rolex. Whilst it can be a casual watch like anything else, the Exp 2 just pulls it off better IMO.
They are both beautiful watches and the Exp 2 is a vastly overlooked piece because most people only wanting one sport Rolex go for something with a ceramic bezel like a sub or GMT, but the Explorer should not be overlooked.

Thoughts of resale should go off your mind now as what really matters is which you love the most and also what anyone thinks shouldn’t be considered but what you want. Personally i would go for the Dj.

Explorer ii all the way.

I've spent a lot of money buying a "dress" watch like the DJ. But when I was able to afford another, I bought an explorer i. The beauty about Rolex, is that their sports watches are so beautiful that they are more than eligible to be a "dress" watch.

First go with explorer ii. Then you'll be happy with it for any occasion and wouldn't need the DJ ever.

I'd personally take the Dj over the explorer.. yes its a bit more dressy but feel its more aesthetically pleasing

For me it would be the DJ. I love that blue dial and the Explorer II just doesn't sing to me.

Here is a suggestion that might just be perfect for you: skip the fluted bezel, go with smooth bezel which is middle of the way of the two that you have listed. Can be found at a good price too.

Have both watches and love both, equally. Don't worry about resale, enjoy whatever you choose.

Thanks for all the advice

I have pushed the button on the Explorer II in black and can’t be happier

It’s more subtle from afar and has great functionality.
As well as the versatility of the black face, I like the fact that the pips have silver surrounds, unlike the polar which has black surrounds.

I think the DJ is more of a jewellery piece that announces arrival. It has a place in my lineup but I guess to come

The icing on the cake is the GMT. I have a boss in a different time zone, and it’s just very convenient

I would question that modern Rolex’s are not investments.
All Rolex’s at their period of time in history have gone up in value.
What is modern now will eventually be vintage.
Yes Rolex and other watch brands resale values have taken a reduction in the current resale value in the current climate but will eventually go up in value albeit possibly slower than in history.

Just buy the watch you prefer and enjoy it rather than worry about resale values would be my opinion.
Chances are though that selling on the right platform will schemings a result in years to come 👍🏼

Blue DJ or Black Exp II?
There's no downside here...get whichever is first available, then pursue the second one.

Too funny! The only thing worse would have been if I had also posted a similar comment about this 5 years ago.

It shouldn't even be a factor in your decision. Not to mention, it's the best way to suck any enjoyment you might find in this hobby. Get the watch you want.

To quote a song I know, nothing else matters.
