Houston, we have a problem...

I lent my 1999 omega Speedmaster reduced to my brother... he decides it’s a good idea to take it for a swim in the Atlantic... comes back to me like this:

Ouch.

So, of course, I need to take the case back off and check out the damage...

Not looking good. The dial appears to have started dissolving in the salt water, the thick oozy paint coating the movement. The balance doesn’t turn.

I decide to go deeper, remove the balance and crown. Maybe it’s not so bad underneath that...

Yikes. Not only is the gunk widespread, but rust appears to be forming throughout. Did I mention it’s been about 2 weeks since the faithful plunge???

Next I think (this “thinking” is really starting to cause a problem), let’s remove the automatic works. I’ll keep it all together, only remove a few screws... I’ll be careful.

With the automatic works removed, we can see a plate the separate the chrono works, which sit in the dial side. Amazingly, at this point there is still sea water between the dial and crystal (wtf??). That’s gotta come out!

Next, bezel off and crystal off. Dial and chrono works come out. I think I’ve found the breach... there appeared to be some deterioration around the bezel gasket. I would have never guessed that to be the non-air-tight point of weakness. But, given all the water inside the dial - crystal cavity, I think that’s it. Sneaky.

At this point, as you can see, it’s easy to ascertain that the movement is toast, DOA, not-coming-back, RIP, swimmin’ with the fishes... you get it. I decide to forge on!

I remove the hands (all 6!), and separate the dial from the chrono works. This is trickier than you might expect.

Then I take a go at the chrono. At this point I’m in way over my head (actually, I’ve been way over my head for some time now), but the thing is shot, so I see how far I can take it.

Once I got into the chrono mechanism, I’m basically cooked. Very finicky, particularly the reset button. I see how it all connects, but getting it back together is beyond me. It’s 2am now, I’m fuming. Time to put it down for good. RIP Speedy Reduced.

Yikes!!! Send... the watch in for a "expensive" repair, and toss your brother back in the Atlantic...

Several options at this point, as I see it. The case, crown, and original bracelet are still in very good shape. I could see if I can find a watchmaker that would refit a brand new movement, new dial, hands, crystal. Like rebuilding a car from the frame. Or, sell off the usable pieces, and try to recoup some value. Either way, lesson learned.

Oh well. I would look at it as a new project. Find someone who can do a repair/restoration and go for it. Great watch and I would not just let it go. I might even consider sending it back to Omega. It will be costly but worth it in the end. What a great story when the watch is back and right. No more loaning watches out though.

This was painful to scroll through. I hope none of my watches ever go through that kind of hurt...

Let us know what you decide to do and what the finished product looks like!

Oh my God, that's awful. Aren't the Speedy's (allegedly) 50m waterproof??? I never swam with mine out of fear this would happen.

Yes! The problem here, I think, was that the watch was something like a 1998-9 vintage and probably never had a service. Those gaskets don’t last forever.

It hurts to look at...but I think you created a great advertisement for the Omega Service Centers to have a watch pressure checked for water resistance frequently.

I think this is where I’ve ended up... it’s a new project and will be something we can all laugh about someday. This watch (case at least) will carry A LOT of history!!!

And DEFINITELY no more watch loans to my bro.

Tell your brother he owes You about $3000, and never lend him a watch again. https://www.chrono24.com/omega/ref-351050.htm#gref
