Patrizzi dial in the wild
A friend was thinking of trading his Daytona as he thought they might be worth a few quid and asked me to have a look at it! The best bit is he thinks his brother has an identical one with a 'funny' dial. I'm waiting to get serial info to see if it is in the right group of case numbers. It definitely has a creamy brown hew.

The Patrizzi's have been fetching a premium for sometime, and recently it appears there is quite the demand in Hong Kong for them.
In May of this year, a few sold at almost 30k USD, and as they become more difficult to obtain, that in itself will continue to drive prices up even further. Look at what the world economy has done to the exotic car and real estate markets. 7 years ago you could buy a low body Countach for 200-250k, and now they're 500-600k. Yes you can buy a new Aventador for 450k, but so can everyone else. As most people that have the disposable income to play in these price ranges will tell you......most of the time it is not about the item they are buying, but the hunt, the find, and the purchase. After they have the item, then it will usually sit as they find a new target to hunt. It is all about how to be different, and have what others cannot. https://www.phillips.com/detail/ROLEX/HK080117/1114 CHEERS! JODAOR |

The question that I have is why did the dial get named after Osvaldo Patrizzi? I googled and found out who he is in the watch world, but nothing tells why his name is attached to the Daytonas with discolored sub dials?

The origin of the name iirc comes from the liquidation of a collection by an owner with that name - this was the first time the brown sub dials showed up with any fanfare.

I also remember hearing that only certain serial numbers were capable of being "true" Patrizzi dials due to Rolex correcting the manufacturing error. What were those serial numbers?

And....unscrupulous sellers would create the brown look by blowing cigar smoke on the dials of Daytonas to sell them to unsuspecting punters.

This is correct. My friend has the full set so I'm waiting to find out if the serial number fits the right timeframe.

I think it looks great with the bronze colored sundials. They should make this version on purpose.

It turns out that my friend doesn't have paperwork and will need to remove bracelet to find out for sure. The timeframe fits in with it being about right. The first detail I remember is that it cannot have an inverted 6 to be a Patrizzi. It was named after the collector who liquidated part of his huge collection including some oddly brown sub-dialled Daytonas.

They can in fact have an inverted 6 and be Patrizzi as long as they fit into the production dates/serials. Mine is a "S" serial from 1994 and has the inverted 6.
