Re - Lume And Affected Value

Im looking to potentially buy a 1680 that has potentially been re-lumed.

How does a re-lume affect the value of the watch?

A lot, however how much it depends on the watch. On the other hand I have seen auction houses that sold clearly re-lumed dials for premium prices, so there are buyers for them

relume will always lower the value.

why has it "potentially" been relume. It either is or it isn't, and if the seller isn't telling you then you dont want to buy from that seller.

The seller is saying it has most likely been re-lumed. "Potentially" comes in because the RF seem to have more knowledge than most.

Post pics pls. A relume is better than washed/no-lume and if the dealer is pricing the piece as if it were a relume and you cant tell the difference...

Agree relumed, or replaced hands.
But dial looks newer lume than hands

Insert is later than watch, you need better pictures to be able to determine how to proceed. If someone says it’s “probably been relumed” probably means it has, and I am not sure if I would want to deal with someone that can’t just be straight.

If you had macro pics of the plots you could get a much better answer here, no one can tell anything from that shot. I took macro pics of one of my watches that had light tritium markers and you can clearly see its tritium.

that dial is "probably" relumed... and reprinted and looks like an asian reinterpretation of a classic red sub dial..

walk away.

Doesn't look relumed, it looks like the original paint is flaking off the white plots.

If it is an authentic red dial, perhaps the plots could be professionally re-lumed. A re-lumed Red still has value, they don't make them any more.

relume or not is not the major issue with this dial...

The watch appears to be put-together from a box of parts to me.

Aside from the markers, the red sub is what has really stood out to me. I can't find anything that matches the red sub on this dial. Everything else seems to be. bold red

Passed on it anyway. not interested in anything that is a re-lume, not to mention everything else.

The price seemed to represent the condition, he was asking $15k, thoughts on price?

I'm more concerned about the hands....the Y in the hour hand looks too fat to me ....

I'm going to agree with Tools. Looks like it may have been put together.

Dial definitely wrong, look at where SUBMARINER ends vs. depth line or where the ‘=‘ is, etc.

Back to the topic, I recently opted to relume a MK IV dial that had been poorly relumed (plots only) before I bought it. Very happy with my decision because the state it was in would have driven me nuts (shouldn’t have bought it in the first place but that’s a different story). See pics before and after.

there are some lume guys here in the USA that work with tritium on these dials ....

then for a vintage dial like a 1680 or 1675 that is missing some lume on some or all plots

the safe bet is to >NOT< have the dial tritium relumed? ... how about if new lume is applied to partially fallen lume? ... or is the process to removed all the old lume and relume the entire dial?

Unless you’re willing to have the entire dial redone if the partial relume fails, then don’t fiddle with a partial job. They almost never match perfectly.

There have been some scary good redials done and shown recently. Scary as in undetectable from a true originally perfect dial.

I assume Redial as in just the lume plots? the puffy lume? Any refinish dial I have seen the date window is a huge tell.
