Help please, novice!
Would appreciate any more info on this watch. It's my wife's and it was given to her by her Gran. The stamps on the inside of the case are Edinburgh 1900. It's 9 carat and the case number is 591916. W&D stamped also. It has the retailers name and location on its face which is Macraes Inverness Highlands Scotland. It was purchased in the 60's we think. It currently doesn't work and it would be good to know if it is worth repairing. I have more photos but I can only get one to upload to this thread.
Many thanks. |

W&D stands for Wilsdorf and Davis and appears on watches much earlier than 1960. The 9ct and retailers name could indicate a case that was manufactured in the commonwealth, possibly even Scotland. Dennison manufactured many gold cases for Rolex during those times it was advantageous tax wise to ship just the movement and case them later.
That's the good news, the bad news is there isn't much market for non oyster ladies dress watches. They are usually valued at materials value plus whatever premium you can get. If it has sentimental value you might get an estimate for repair but I wouldn't put much money into it unless your wife just want's to wear it. Good luck. |

the main problem with these watches, from my experience, is that the gold links on that band wear out. That causes unrepairable (cost wise) damage to the watch. If you perform a COA on the watch (in US it'll run you at least $200) you still have to deal with weak parts of the case/bracelet.
Richard is absolutely right - the watch is worth cost of material (i.e. gold value - and for 9K it's not much ... about $17 per gram). Vlad |
