Met Retired Navy Diver today .... and his service issued Tudor Sub

Went to get my Jeep Rubicon Recon oil change service done this morning and met this great American named John.

He was wearing a Navy ball cap, so being a retired officer myself I struck up a conversation with him. Turns out he was a helmet diver who started his career as an E1 in 1960.

I told him about my father, who was a scuba diver who started his career in 1958.

I asked him if he happened to still have his service issued dive watch. He smiled wide and said, “Yes, it’s a Rolex”.

He proudly pulled up hid left sleeve and removed his Velcro black nylon strap and handed me his Tudor Submariner. I asked if I could take a picture. He approved.

Here is his Sub - never been serviced or polished. No, I did not offer to buy it. He said he never takes it off, but allowed me to hold and photo it because of our Navy brotherhood.

This beautiful watch has been to depth all over the world in every ocean during his 30 years as he rose through the ranks from E1 to CWO4 (chief warrant officer).

Amazing. Great piece of history. Was there anything interesting on the back to commemorate it's purpose?

It is in every way other than dial and movement. Not sure if this would be ETA but pretty strong automatic running since 1960 with no service.

I wanted to see the caseback so bad, but it was on a cheap NATOish strap that looked to be involved to get to the caseback.

I left him my contact info. If I meet up with him again, I’ll get pics of the caseback.

The provenance is so incredible. Each story was so interesting from diving dredges in Vietnam to diving for king crab in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

That is awesome. I tell my dad all the time how disappointed I am that he never picked up a Rolex during his 20-year service career.

Great Story. Thanks for Sharing ! The hands are in Amazing shape. The hands on my 5513 from 65 have been replace Twice. This proves Tudor is also a Fine Time Piece !

The chamfers on that watch are sublime. THIS watch is a good example of the reason to forego getting your watch polished.

Thanks for sharing. Utterly fantastic

Cool watch and great story. I'm certain the divers didn't care that it was a Chevy vs a GMC. Made by the same company even though it is a wholly owned subsidiary.

Great chance encounter, and beautiful story. That watch looks amazing as it is. Would be a shame to mess it up with a polish.

Thanks for sharing this!

Cheers,
Carl

Wow...talk about a "tool watch". That piece defines the word. It looks as if it was used as intended and has served its owner well as he served all of us well.

Many thanks to you both for your service!

A timely reminder what a watch is for. No flippers in those days I suspect!

Stunning watch and a lovely story - thanks for sharing
