great little find I must say.
What baffles me is how a thrift store would sell a rolex watch (I know its in bad condition) for $2.50. A 5 min google search and you would know its worth more. Anyway, their loss! I cant tell if the "cracks" are on the crystal or the dial itself - i'm assuming crystal but have never seen such damage before. Keep us posted! |

I wondered about that too. The guy who found/sold it said, about the thrift store, that "I went there on a school service trip and found the watch sorting items from donation boxes."

I would bet that he was going through the donation boxes and found the watch before any of the store members did. Then perhaps he just mentioned that he found a broken old watch. It's not inconceivable.

Unfortunately, it's not inconceivable that someone would cheat and defraud a charitable organization while supposedly donating his time to help them. Not you ... the original "buyer".

Yep dial is not cracked. However rust and other particulates have settled on the dial. Hopefully that will clean up. Will be getting the caseback opened this week when my watchmaker is back from Easter.

Now, if the original buyer deliberately attempted to misrepresent what he'd found, that's a different story. But to simply ask: "How much for this watch?" without offering up an opinion on its theoretical value isn't either (even if it's not the most charitable approach). |

"clean up" - Do NOT touch the dial - you will DESTROY it - leave it and the hands well alone!!!!!

This was my thought when I read the story. The sorting area is most likely full of things and really busy, that the original “buyer” pocketing it might have been a possibility. Anyone can recognize the brand “Rolex” and would not dare to sell it without trying to check if it’s authentic. I just found out that Goodwill had an online auction for watches it receives, including smaller vintage brands. Sometimes there are Rolex and Omega too. I’m not saying the buyer was sorting at Goodwill, but I’m sure thrift stores have their processes on pricing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Watch is good - normal light up on lume. The tritium is dead but the compounds once excited by the tritium are still excited - briefly - by natural / UV light....
Nice find. Yup

What a sick sick watch. I would just go get a fresh tube of crest toothpaste and work on the crystal while drinking a nice glass of Chardonnay until I could see the dial. Then wear it as is

Update: Mike has sourced a new tropic 19 for the watch and is currently servicing the movement. It's all original.

Just got it back from Mike at Rolliworks. He did a fantastic job getting a new T19, servicing the movement, brushing top of lugs, and reluming the hands. The hands were in very very poor shape (hour hand was blackened and the other two didn’t have any lume) so I opted to get them relumed.
Mike was in constant communication and very helpful. I will definitely be sending my 1016 there for service! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
