Best Rolex to start a collection?
Hi TRF members,
I suspect that this question might have already been answered multiple times before (in which case I apologize for beating a dead horse), however, I thought that I would ask again since new Rolex watches come out regularly: What in your eyes would be the best Rolex to start a collection with, and more importantly, why? I intentionally leave the question open so that no restriction in style or price comes into play. What I am after here are your thoughts and the reasoning behind them. As always, thank you for time! Explorer, you can go anywhere from there plus it’s sporty and dressy.

Depends on so many factors: age, occupation, fashion style, etc.

Black Sub is a go anywhere watch that will cover all bases, chances of getting one at retail are slim these days though so maybe a DJ41

Thank you very much for all your suggestions.
The Rolex Submariner is indeed a watch that caught my attention, as well as a nice gold Rolex Day-Date for more formal occasions. The Rolex Datejust and Explorer are also superb. I will keep of all that in mind and let you know once I have made a purchase. Please keep sharing your thoughts if you like as this is always a pleasure to read. Thank you. |

My vote is for the classic datejust in 36mm. There are heaps of dial, bezel and bracelet combinations which help personalise it a little more. Go for the one that speaks to you most :)

Without a doubt the best one is the one you dream of. Hang out here and look and read. The one that you want most even if it seems really hard to get is the one you should get. For me I started with an OP and ended up with a Platona. Have fun, enjoy, and welcome!!!

1) The one YOU want to wear !
2) The Explorer or Submariner probably has the most versatility, heritage, and draws minimal attention from non enthusiast.

Start with what you want the most. It depends on budget and watch availability. It also depends on how long you are willing to wait. You can dip into the range at the price point that suits you. If I had the money I would start my collection with something like a PM Sky Dweller. Or a PM Day Date. I also like the WG Sub Date. If I was going TT or SS I would aim for a Sky Dweller first. If that was too steep I'd go for a 42mm Polar for starters. This is actually where I started. Providing a watch is in your desired budget, looks good on you and wears comfortably, you can't go wrong. If I can't get what I want from an AD, I spend as much time, if not more researching the seller as I do the watch.

Well if you're planning a collection, then map out the components of it and look out for models as they come available. I am a sub guy. I have my favorite 6 series reference: the SD43. My favorite 5 series reference: 14060m two-line. I'm still waiting to find that 5513/5517 milsub to complete my Rolex sub trifecta...let me know if you see one

Definitely DJ41 fluted from AD to establish buying history. DJ41 screams Rolex iconic design(DD too if you can afford it and like PM, will open doors at AD). DJ41 can be used as dress or sports. Stay away from Explorer, as it's not well recognised as a Rolex to a non WIS in my opinion. I would jump on an Air King for a special, and no date sports Rolex (anti magnetic added bonus). If you could find it at an AD now. A Black sub date is the easiest to get from AD now with little purchase history. Then you will be able to get on a real list for the really juicy stuff. This is what I suggest to anyone who asks me how to start a collection.

A starter Rolex insinuates that you will not be fulfilled and will later look to others to quench your growing need.
I have just one Rolex, I bought it brand new, it’s a daily watch for life. I’m committed to it, it’s committed to me. It’s ‘my’ watch...there are many like it (etc.). Buy the ONE. Keep it for life. That’s ‘the’ Rolex, undiluted. |

If I could do it over again to save some cash and time, a Sub or GMT would have been my 1st. Instead, I went with SS pre- owned “meh” 36mm DJ w/ jubilee and 16622 YM. Both were very nice watches but were too flashy.
Now that 6-digit GMTs have PCLS and large bold bezel insert font so I would go 16710. A Sub and GMT would have made me happy from the get go. |

I think most Rolex collections started of with either a two-tone DJ or a Sub. Mine started with the former.

I would and did start many years ago with a SS Submariner. I would look to a six digit modern SS Submariner as a first. Great watch, updated case, bezel and the amazing glide lock clasp. I would pick the one I want, Date or ND, find one slightly pre-owned and complete from one of our Trusted Sellers, pay and begin enjoying my watch. Simple.

I agree with others, it really depends on your personal taste, a well as what you really like.
Some staples or cornerstones in the lineup are the usual suspects of the Explorer (I), DateJust, and the Submariner. These are all great options to start a collection, but any reference you want will work! Good luck! |
