Big Pilot Decision
I am at a crossroads...
Do I task myself with tracking down an original 5002, or go with the newer 500912 or 501001? I know I want the number 9 on the face but that is all I have been able to commit to. What would you choose?? |

Pics of the watches proposed will help with opinions and discussions. Until then, let me google the reference numbers and come back

I've been having the same debate. I have landed on the 5002 if a big pilot at all. Im starting to lean toward saving longer term for a Patek since I already have a sport watch, Submariner, that I love.
Once you decide on the 5002 you will then have to decide on the 5002 slow beat or the 5002 Transitional model (5002 with the 5004 movement). Decisions...decisions! |

I’d go for the least expensive one. I try not to make myself crazy about getting the most “collectable” variants, if it’s basically the same watch, which it is for the standard big pilot, I just get the cheapest one.

I prefer the numerals on the 5002 dial myself.

Pros for the 5002 in my book:
Numerals White date wheel Its the original BP Brown buffalo strap Pros for 500912 Arguably better movement Ability to purchase new Cleaner power reserve dial |

I would add the seconds hand of the 5002 as a pro. The long, counter weighted hand is beautiful. I also like the 5002 power reserve better.

IWC just released the 501001, it has a 4htz mvmt. The length of the seconds hand is long and you can more easily see the seconds tick with the 3htz mvmts. With a 4htz, its smooth as silk going around. I think this was a much needed upgrade. So put the 501001 in the camp with the 5009.
Pricing, the 5002 is around the same price as a mint cond 5009-501001. It really depends on what your after. I own a 5009 and I love it. Its really two different buyers when it comes down to it. 5002- Vintage feel, pilot to the bone 5009-501001- Modern, pilot with a little dressy touch |

I have 5002 and no question it is 100% the best BP watch. Like it iconic look, the 9, the white date, without cutting 2/4, chapter ring dial...
All make a Big Pilot to be a Big Pilot. For the movement, I prefer the slow beat one to add the vintage look of second hand moves!! BP 5002 is just incredible!

5002 all day long! I had the transitional model and it was one hot watch! The dial has such a vintage look to it and just surpasses the modern.

Hey Ken, I have a 5002 trans and love it. As you said, there is just something about the dial when viewed on the wrist. It’s too big for mine but I wear it anyway! Do they still drive a decent premium over slow beats. Or have those days past? . Just curious. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I am in the same boat and get more confused every day!
The Blue Petite Prince models are also wonderful. Lately I have been eyeing the Bronze version with blue hands!!!!!!
