What is considered a dress watch? And if some are dress watches, what is a regular watch? I'm new to this forum, and new to my first Rolex watch. I read a lot of "that is a nice dress watch..."

Welcome once again, Thurnau....

A dress watch is usually one that is flat and sleek and comes on a nice croc strap. I mean, that's the general rule of thumb.

But in the Rolex Oyster line up, a TT DJ or a Day-Date on President can also be considered dressy. Rolex have their Cellini line up which is made up of only precious metal and those are definitely dressy.

But many of us also consider our sports Rollies as "dressy" if the occasion so demands it. For example, my TT Blue YM while definitely a sports watch first, can be quite "dressy" too!!

I think JJ’s on the right track here. It’s also my perception of a dress watch. Gold Cartier Tank on croc strap, gold Patek Calatrava on ditto strap, etc. Needn’t be an expensive watch but the gold-croc combo is often used. But….. did Bond look bad wearing a Sub under his tux? No, by Jove, he didn’t! Now, poor me another dry Martini

A dress watch is what girls wear when they put on a dress......simple

If you really follow the fashion "gurus", a dress watch should be as described above and should be relatively slim with a leather or animal skin band and fit sleekly under the sleeve of a shirt and/or sport jacket, suit jacket or tuxedo. However, I've been to many dressy affairs and I've seen many men wearing their little Movado watches, their Cartier watches, their Tiffany watches, their trendy "tank" watches and to me they all look like "girly men" while I choose to wear my manly sub date under my tux. Yeah, those wimps at GQ will tell me that I'm breaking the fashion rules, but these are the same guys that give men advice on how to get pedicures and facials! You can let all those girly men wear their fancy little girly watches under their dress clothes and be spot on with their fashion sense, I'll be the guy with the sub-date under my sleeve drinking my liquor straight up WITHOUT the little umbrella in my drink!!

That was my point exactly! The Sub is all round. 2/3 Vodka (Ketel 1), 1/3 Dry Martini, a dash of Angostura Bitter and 2 olives! I always have a shaker with this (bar the olives) in my freezer. But it can knock you down big time

Yes, it does. 13 to 14 mm is not that high. The cuffs (of non bespoke shirts) are to accomodate men with large wrists as well. With a Panerai I have my doubts but a Rolex will fit

Yes, the good doctor does have a name. Feel free to call me David or Dave, but you can NEVER call me a "girly man", because you'll never catch me in one of those girly man watches! As soon as I see a guy wearing one of those girly man watches, I am POSITIVE that when I shake his hand I'm gonna' get one of those wimpy dead fish handshakes, instead of a good ol' firm handshake. I sincerely believe that I can tell a lot about an individual by the watch he/she wears. And I never do business with a man wearing a little girly man watch.

I guess you have never tried on a Radiomir Fransie. It dresses up perfectly.

IMHO, while a SS dive watch certainly "can" be worn with a shirt and tie, a slimmer case or more importantly a nice strap or all gold band usually denotes it better. I guess a Calatrava "could" be worn with a wet suit, but not sure why you would want to do that either.

A dress watch is something that you wear, that yourself feels at home with.And not something thats dictated, by any fashion guru, or some sort of dress code, just be yourself,nothing more nothing less.

I'm not even going to read the posts that have come before mine. A "dress watch" is... a matter of opinion. Ok, I could go a little farther and say that to me, a dress watch is one that looks appropriate with business or formal attire (but not necessarily business casual attire.) For me, it's a classic, or elegantly styled watch on a nice leather strap. See that Patek 5196 or the new 5119 for some good examples.
