I have a 7.5” wrist. 42mm is generally perfect for me, but I wear up to 44mm. Still getting used to the sd43, which wears large to me. I’m going to be trying a subc, so we’ll see if the 40mm maxi case will work.
In addition to lug to lug, it depends a lot on the bezel and crystal size, IMHO. A dress watch with little to no bezel and a massive crystal looks much too large on me at 43. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I'm afraid if I don't mention the number "40" in my answer I might get banned from this forum.

Must be 40mm minimum. I always thought I had a skinny wrist but it measures 8 and 1/4". The 36mm is too small, just looks like a ladies watch. Its too bad too; I'm missing out on a lot of fine 36 mm watches believe me.

40mm MAX, have small wrists. The current YachtMaster and the older Submariner with thinner Lugs are my perfect size.
Current Submariner looks funny on my wrist because of the FAT Lugs, thats just my opinion. I once tried on an Omega 44 mm Speedmaster and it fit OK because of the small Lugs. |

Lucky enough to own a DBlue and friend has the SD43 - both are perfect size for me and wouldn't go any smaller

It's all relative to the wrist size. What looks big/small on some looks the opposite for others. I've done the Panerai 44mm cases and on reflection I wouldn't go back to that. Sweet spot for me is 38 - 40mm.

You know not all consider 36mm tiny just because you have decided it is tiny from your point of view. Also not everyone has small wrists either just because they prefer 36mm. Open your mind to the thought that somewhere out there are people that has a different opinion than you do.

37-40mm dress->sport
I have watches that are 37mm to 42mm but sweet spot is probably 39.5 and lug-to-lug 47mm. Wrist size 6.5". |

Attending to my 17cm wrist, my ideal size in a watch would be from 36 to 39mm.

What do you Consider the Ideal Watchsize
On this forum over the years I’ve regularly heard members make reference to the ‘bigger watch fad’.
In my opinion, I don’t think the fad referred to is simply 36mm plus size, I think it’s more the 43mm plus size. Rolex rolling out larger watches is nothing to do with fad, but more the way in which watch sizes have ‘evolved’. Whilst there are some larger, perhaps less attractive models in their line up over more recent years, their are none that anyone could say is a fad watch for now. Yes Rolex are guided by what the masses want and buy, but there is nothing they produce now that couldn’t be worn in 20/30 years on a normal basis. Look at the 36mm of decades gone by, smaller for today’s ‘tastes’ but still strong sales and so many wearing them. Also, more recently people have observed and commented on watch sizes becoming toned down again, which I think is true, but I don’t think any watch house is about to start churning out more 34-36mm watches en-mass for men. I just think the choice of mid-forty sizes is being reduced. I think that in previous times over the decades of the past, smaller watches 34/36mm for men were the norm, and 36mm is still without a doubt the classic size. I think though that for watches between 36mm and 41mm - this is the size scale that is completely normal and generally accepted now, for men anyway, and that’s not a fad. Look at Patek and JLC etc... plenty of their watches are of the late 30’s early 40’s segment these days. These are classic watch houses with timeless designs and watches that will withstand the test of time trend-wise. That should tell us a lot. I also think that a lot of people concentrate on a documented watch size, rather than considering what the watch looks like on the wrist, regardless of what the spec size tells them. Evidence of this is in many of the posts on this thread. Everyone chiming in with their wrist-size and the ideal case diameters. It’s so generic! Loads of watches that are smaller and have huge lug to lug distances not suitable on that basis, or the opposite for some larger watches having much smaller lug distances. Look at the DJ2. I own one, and on paper, 41mm will look totally fine for my 6.75” wrist. It does look fine, however it does wear more like a 43mm piece, based on lug-to lug measurement. It’s just not as straight forward as; with this wrist size you can go for xx size. Also, and I mean this with absolute respect for you guys in the US, but I think European perception is different in terms of the elegance of a watch. I think you’ll find a lot more 36mm watches being worn by mean here than their larger counterparts. Generally speaking, I think your preference veers towards larger watches, or at least a larger look on the wrist. Whilst I appreciate wrist size is the key driver to what size watch you need, surely you need to take your whole size/build in to consideration. A shorter, slimmer man of say 5ft 8 with a 7” wrist might look more clumsy wearing a 42” watch than someone with the same size/dimension wrist who is over 6ft. |

I don't think there is an "ideal" size. A 36mm watch on a 6.5" wrist is going to look great, but look drastically different on an 8" wrist. Just like a 44mm watch looks cartoonishly huge on a small wrist, I think it would look fine on a larger wrist. I have a 7.5" wrist and, IMHO, my SD43 is perfect.

38-41mm factoring modern case sizes across all watches. 39-40mm seems to be best case size for Rolex for me.

You can’t have a blanket ideal watch size. It completely depends on the context. For instance I love the heft of the SD43 because it’s a dive watch. Would I wear it with a suit?, no. For formal events I like 36mm. What I care about most is lug to lug length. For my wrist 50mm lug to lug is the max I will go. For example a 40mm IWC Mark VIII doesn’t work on my wrist but an SD43 does all due to the SD43 being 2mm smaller lug to lug.

I used to like and wear smaller size watches, I have 6.5" wrist. But when I tried DSSD it felt comfy and have a modern, masculine look. DSSD is 44mm but appears smaller. This is my favorite watch. DSSD is my casual/weekend watch. My BLNR which is 40mm seems small and light. So, I like bigger watches 40-44mm.

As others have mentioned, highly variable on wrist size, wrist shape, and forearm size (IMO). For my physique, 40mm with a slim case, is ideal. SubC is about the largest I can get away with, and the DaytonaC is perfect.

6.75 inch wrist here. I love both 36mm and 40mm. Not certain if I’d go smaller or bigger with future purchases.
