@illiguy, I completely agree (and indirectly I think this is where Rolex got Daytona distribution right because when I walked in and saw literally 6 speed masters of the same reference for sale, it was a bit of a turnoff, and I'm sure drags down the excitement of this piece). For me, I think the real challenge is is the premium here worth the extra 10k over an existing speed master in the collection when the 321 will be vying for wrist time against RO's and Daytonas.
I don’t think it’s an either / or. Submariner and Speedy are (to me) core staples of any collection. For a modern collector, the new Cal. 321 hits all the notes. ROs, Daytonas, complications, etc. all have their rightful place as well. Wrist time is a (real) first world problem. I envy those who are happy with a one-watch collection, as in theory it sounds great. As a one watch collection, the Cal. 321 makes a viable case. Water resistance might be a deterrent however.

Currently, the 321P sees more wrist time. Largely due to the season where I prefer to wear strap-watches.

I'm sure come summer, I'll be back to bracelets where the 321-EW will see more frequent use.

In terms of preference, I'm certainly taken aback by the platinum version. When you consider all the components that make up the watch, who wouldn't be?

However in terms of historical importance, I believe it's the 321 EW that will become the unicorn it deserves to be.

You should pick up a strap or 2 for the EW. I have 2 of the trilogy leather straps. Not cheap but they look and feel fantastic and are a good change up (esp for the winter as you say).

At 19mm lug-width, not sure how the 321EW would look on a strap? I've have a CK2998 on strap and wasn't fond of the look.

I think It looks great. The major difference is that the lugs are slightly longer on the EW. I’ll post a couple of pics. Horses for courses and all that.

Back in the day when Rolex watches were readily available you could say the same thing about their similarities. The cases are almost all identical apart from a few tweaks and you either get an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet. A GMT with a black bezel insert on first glance looks like a Sub-date unless you really know a thing about crown guards and crowns. I wish I had a shot of the trays in Hour Glass. The availability mystique is a recent development.

I do agree that the difference with the Speedy is that it’s all a variation on the exact same model and complication. But it’s not as big a difference to compare Rolex to Omega as comparing a Triumph Bonneville to a Ninja.

I’ll add to this. My 321 is one of the best watches I’ve ever put on my wrist. It’s a watch with soul. I absolutely love it

Back to the black strap. Usually I much prefer the brown, but black suits this well….
