Icon14 2 Week Review - Explorer 1 MK 2 39mm

Two week review of owning the Explorer 214270 but some background first.

I have worn Rolex watches for 2 decades now having purchased my first one which was a 16610 sub with date which I purchased in 1999 from an AD. I give this background so you know what I am comparing this review of the Explorer.

The Submariner screams Rolex as it is probably the most recognized model with the iconic bezel. The Explorer on the other hand is much more subdued with the smooth shiny bezel and flat matte black dial. The 3 6 9 numerals are present and there is no date. The watch I am reviewing is the recently discontinued 39mm model.

Having always had the date on my subs I wondered if I would miss it. I can tell you NO! In fact, I have come to appreciate it NOT being there - let me explain.

I really don't need to know the date all of the time. I might need to know it a few times a week but I do like to know the time of day. I effortlessly and almost unconsciously check the time with nothing to get in the way or distract. The date was a distraction for me (I might be alone) so I do not miss it.

I also find that I look at my phone about 75% LESS now because I don't need to check the time there and of course, while I am at it check email and the news...not anymore!

Next was the weight - I loved the weight of the sub on my wrist so I wondered if the explorer might feel too lite. Not at all, the upgraded bracelet makes up for any weight difference and the heavier bracelet also feels more balanced as the sub had a tendency when worn loose to be top heavy.

The bracelet is wonderful and wears great. I really love the clasp which is secure and very comfortable. This feels like a quality time piece and a huge improvement over the old style band!

The look of the watch itself is a sophisticated hybrid dress/tool watch. It fits with a suit much better than a sub ever could. The smooth shiny bezel contrasting with the matte black background is just visually refined and works for dressing up.

BUT of course - it is the Explorer so after the dress event you change clothes but you don't need to change your watch as it is ready for just about anything extreme conditions and it will keep perfect time for you in style!

Here is a photo I took last night -

Nice - they are a great watch, I have come to really appreciate mine and feel fortunate to have one. I am interested though to see what the new 36mm will look like in the metal on my wrist as I wonder if it would look even better than the 39mm one on my 6.75 inch wrist.

Great review Lee! You can see your enthusiasm for the watch in your writing. What are your thoughts after another 6 weeks? I agree with you on all points. The Explorer is somehow slightly smaller, but because of the large face, it's sort of large at the same time. Telling time is a breeze with such a clean dial. Rolex nailed it on this model! My all-time favorite watch.

Great review Lee, glad to hear you’re enjoying it

I’m surprised to hear your weight comparisons to the Sub. I’d have thought the 5 digit would feel lighter on the wrist.

Regardless, great watch

I only own one Rolex and the Explorer is in fact so versatile. It’s an everyday, do everything, looks great with anything Rolex. And it doesn’t scream Rolex which I prefer. My 39 wears very well on my 7.25 wrist and I love the clear bold face. Just a great watch.
