I will definitely keep the thread updated as this is the first time I have made a calculated risk to buy a high value product that I do not 100% trust from Ebay, so it should be an interesting rollercoaster ride. In the best (and perhaps somewhat unlikely) case I get a good value used Rolex. In the worst case I don't receive it, or I receive it and get a replica, and then have to claim my money back from Ebay or my credit card company.

Oh well, it's been a long time since I had any of this kind of purchasing doubts or drama in my life, so at the least it will be an entertaining story and an experience to reflect on in future.

Has anyone looked up the seller on ebay? Looks legit to me. They sell a lot of jewels, Tudors and other watches. Probably no scam at all. I hope OP made a bargain here :)

I wouldn’t rely on cc company covering your loss since those usually exclude jewelry and also may have a limit depending on the cc company and type of card. Check the fine print.

Watch was rejected at the ebay authenticator...listed as NEW had obvious wear marks and scratches that were photographed by ebay..fo a $13,000 rolex watch this is pretty bad...wasted my 1,000 cupon... never a response from the seller.. never offered a replacement...eday did a good job!

Well I just spoke to an auction house local to me that specialises in watches and they said that they can do an external check to verify authenticity in terms of the serials on the usual visible places matching the warranty card (which they do on a regular basis to verify all of their watches), but they can't open it or it would void the warranty. I guess I can also do this serial check with a magnifying glass but I will definitely take it to them for a confirmation.

If that basic check fails then it is returns-ville for the watch. If that check passes then I guess my only real issue would be if anything had changed inside the watch.

It is not that seller at all and I am not going to post the seller because I have zero trust for the internet or that some crazy loon would not contact that seller. If that sounds paranoid then so be it, but my several decades of dealing with people on and off of the internet have certainly made me somewhat guarded.

When the watch arrives I will update the story and keep you guys posted.

I have done this. But if I were you I would use my cc through paypal to add another layer of protection because paypal still needs to authorize funds after your cc payment is taken.

Paypal refunded me $11k this month for a fake seller.

You're missing the #1 rule in buying watches: Buy the seller first.

Now, whether this works out for you or not, only time will tell. I'm in the camp of I doubt it, but hey, I guess stranger things have happened.

I bought a vehicle on eBay and thought I had many protections. The vehicle was completely misrepresented. It was nothing like the description and didn’t run. I tried to go through eBay appeals process and was surprised by how little they actually protected. No help at all from them and learned a valuable lesson. Their protections are really just all talk and fluff but there isn’t anything real behind it. At least in my experience.

The vehicle was cheap and I ended up restoring it and enjoyed it quite a bit but I was surprised by the experience. eBay’s word was that it’s not against their rules to 100% lie about a product being sold and it’s buyer beware. The only thing they’d even get involved in is if there were catastrophic damage such as a seized engine, blown transmission, or bent frame or another issue that would not allow a vehicle to be registered and considered totaled. Even if the vehicle was just short of those benchmarks and a total pos the seller is allowed to say “like new condition, no rust, no paint damage, new suspension etc” those can all be 100% lies and no problems as far as eBay is concerned.

Will be interested to see what the RSC says about your watch when you send it in.

If I wagered a guess I’d say likely internal damage and needs a full service, missing links or fake bracelet. Those 2 would add up to around $5k missing in the market price.

It may have been a listing mistake on part of the seller. Looking through the watches offered they’re all at market price. So OP may have gotten really lucky on a pricing error.

OP, when did you purchase and has it shipped? Maybe they’ll realize and cancel the transaction. Also, always checkout with PayPal in the future it’s the best protection.

All of this sounds too good to be true, going to be super interesting how this one turns out!

Another point, maybe it’s watch only, generic box and zero papers. And possibly other surprises included.

eBay's buyer (and seller for that matter) "protection" has what I like to call great "on the rack" appeal. Seems like a no brainer on the quick, casual pass but when you start to read the fine print and learn more, you start to see what's really going on. Positive buzzwords, phrases like "warranty", "inspection", "guarantee" and naturally "money back". In the end, they are NOT the seller, just arbitrating between you two. I've bought numerous things on eBay without a problem not because of their warranty but because, as what others have said, I bought the seller. Communicated with them, checked their feedback, checked their rep on forums/boards, etc and of course, laser focused on the watch/product itself. If anything didn't add up, I left.

The eBay protection should be considered a light formality, a backend coverage you should plan on not falling back on. If you keep that in mind, you *should* be fine.

PS, did a Google Search and they’ve been in business for 70-years. Looks kinda like a pawn shop slash whatever and their core business is coins.

There is something clearly amiss here. A seller who sells watches at market prices (Tudor) is going to sell a SKYDWELLER ridiculously below market price. This place is supposedly a pawn broker, that watch would have been sold instantly on their floor..

they know exactly what it’s worth… they would be getting better offers from others since it’s so cheap…etc, etc…why post on eBay..Cmon man… OMG this is a SCAM. It’s no wonder people get ripped off out there.

Fraudsters are masters at their craft and know every angle that’s why they are so good at it. There is a way the fraudster will scam you or they just want to scam eBay, CC, or PayPal. Then you have to jump through all those hoops to hopefully get your money back…

After looking at all the facts to me this looks like a pricing error, the ‘1’ was supposed to be a ‘2’… they’re a legit business and legit eBay seller. My hunch is this was a mistake on their part and will cancel the transaction.
