5513 "Meters First" or "Maxi"
It used to be that the 5513 "meters first" has a premium compared to a 5513 maxi dial in terms of value. Lately, it seems that the price for both are about the same already. Is it because there is a greater demand for maxi dialed 5513s now? Your thoughts will be highly appreciated.

A Maxi MK1 is the only Maxi Dial that I'd pay any premium for. All things being equal though I'd much rather have a meters first. Just a preference at this point. People seem to like the big lume plots though as well as it being the last depth first sub dial

Is it a fact that the lollipop dial (mk3?) is the most desirable?

They have really jumped in value the last couple years.
I foolishly sold mine last year Historically I preferred the meters first but was mainly interested in gilt. Of the matte options my favorite is the MKI Maxi. I really miss mine. Regret moving it.

I would never, ever, ever pay a premium for a meters-first dial (matte) over a feet-first dial, everything else being equal. I've yet to hear a good explanation as to why some collectors consider them more desirable than feet-first dials.
Maxi dials are definitely great and more desirable, in my book anyway. They actually make a strong visual impact on the dial, unlike meters-first dials. |

[QUOTE=The Wesminator;7274774]So educate me and I have spent an age on the wonderful 5513mattedial website, is there a name for my '69 ft first 5513?? As I understand it the Maxi Mk1 did not see the light of day until '76.
many thanks Wes Wes, yours is a nonserif dial.

Visually the Maxi plots look better to me, however there is something extra special about a MF dial.
I agree, prices for maxis have gone up recently. |

Why? I'm originally from Europe, so meters before feet is absolutely meaningless to me. I'm certainly OK with it, but I don't find it more special than feet-first dials.
I still scratch my head every time I read something like this. I guess I'm missing something, although I've yet to hear a good explanation. Is it just because they're older? (I'm talking about the matte dials, of course. Gilts are another story.) |

This excerpt from 5513mattedial.com and Beaumont Millers explanation sums it up for me: The change from the gilt gloss dialed 5513 to the meters first matte dialed 5513 started around the 1.6 mil serial range or 1966. The majority of the cases stamped with a 1.7 serial number were produced in 1968, and by then the meters first matte dial was in full production. However the period from late 1969 to early 1970, consistent with the 2.2 mil serial range, represents an overlap in which both meters first and feet first matte 5513 dials can be found. I have read that perhaps the reason for the transition from meters first to feet first was an attempt to increase sales in the US market, a country that had not at the time and still has not widely adopted the metric system. That and the fact they are more rare make it more special to me. |

An interesting side note .... Feet-first dials are actually more rare on the 5512s if you take the reference's entire production run into account, and assuming Rolex made roughly the same amount each year. The 5512s ran from 1959 to 1978, with the last 8-9 years being made with feet-first dials. |

I prefer maxi dials in general but the mid to late sixties dials with the small plots as well as small dial writing are handsome in their own understated way.
My '67 is almost ready for it's debut but I'm holding off until I have it all together. |

Ideally, I'd like to have a Maxi 3 lollipop but condition is always the main criteria for me so I could not pass on this MK 5.
