4,000 ft - that's awesome !!!!

I hate when you're SCUBA diving and have to stop at 1,000 ft when wearing just a sub.

Both of them were developed in co-operation with Comex, but the Ploprof got dropped due to it lacking a helium value if I remember correctly. So both were actually used for professional divers. If I were going deep sea diving the Ploprof would be the obvious choice because of its hardcore tool look. But the Sea Dweller is a taaad more versatile above the surface

Right, just because something was developed doesn't make it a great tool. Don't get me wrong, I really dig the Ploprof but I would argue that the Sea-Dweller proved to be a far more heavily used design, on land as well as in the sea.

Well, I have been on a submarine tour...but don't think I've ever dived deeper than about 15 feet in my life. LOL. Guess that He escape valve will just look cool. Man, I feel like a poser now.

I really like the Ploprof, gets much more wrist time than the SD. Its actually very comfortable, eventhough its heavy and big, it doesn´t feel that way.
The quality is also very superior to the SD.

I´m not a fan of the SDDS. I like watches with history/DNA, and the SDDS hasn´t any. I appriciate the quality of the SDDS, but its just too "gangsta" for me.

The Ploprof was actually devoloped with Comex and Jacques Cousteau, over a period of 4 years. Comex also used the Ploprof alongside the Rolex watches in the early seventies. Comex used fx the Ploprof during Operation Janus, where they lived on the seabed (250m) for 8 days. The old Ploprof was designed to be so watertight, that not even helium atoms could penetrate the case. They did this with a monoque case, special crown design and L-shaped gaskets. The american diving research centre Ocean Systems Inc. certified this.
Rumor says that Comex choosed to only use watches with HEV because they knew HEV worked, and didn´t want to trust improved case-sealing. We know now that improved case-sealing works, but at that time it was very new and Comex didn´t wanted to take a chance on this new technology.

The Ploprof was meant to be a professional divers watch (pure tool), not a watch that normal people would buy. Thats why it has this very industrial design.
This was also why the Ploprof was never succesfufl, as it was just too special. The Ploprof wasn´t a big seller, so the cost of production couldn´t justify keping the Ploprof in production. Omega probably never recouped their development costs.
This was a time where "nomal" people didn´t wear diver watches (as today, where sporty diver models are so popular), and civilian scubadiving was not so common.
On top of that, the Ploprof was also very expensive. In the early seventies the price was around 700 CHF. If I remeber correctly, a Submariner was around 500 CHF

There was a need for a watch that could more than 1000ft, otherwise Rolex and Comex wouldn´t have invested time and money in developing the SD.
For us normal mortals, I guess 660ft would sufficient for most.
