Guidance needed Tiffany X serial 16610 Sub

Hi, looking for some input...

A family friend has a Tiffany dialed 16610 X serial. It was given to him upon his retirement and he would like to give it to his grandson, who is 18. (Lucky kid!). He has all boxes, papers, tags and the RSC service receipt from its last service in 2002.

It's in nice used condition. It was polished when serviced in '02 and the case is in very good shape, with a couple of minor hairlines, no major gouges anywhere. Bracelet has wear, but very little stretch. Insert is great, crystal has some very minor chipping in edge...very minor.

I was told they wanted it fully serviced and restored and were quoted around $1k by an AD. I suggested that they let me have a look at it and give them some thoughts. I gave it a gentle external cleaning, got the bezel turning again, gave it a good wind, and she runs perfect. And looks like grandpas tool watch should....Very nice, but clearly worn. My suggestion is that they get a movement service, replace the crystal, change gaskets and get a pressure test done. I'd leave the rest be. Let the grandson enjoy it with a bit of grandpas history on it.

Here comes the guidance part. Based on going rates, my guess is market value for a standard 16610 from this era in this shape would be around $4500-$4700. Not sure what the Tiffany dial means as far as value on a sub, though.

So...love to know the value and if you agree on the resto strategy. Here's some pics and thanks!

I would do some research ... I think think the Tiffany dial if I remember correctly
is fairly rare and adds more value to it ... Not too many Tiffany dials out there ...
Good luck !!!

Fullset Tiffany should cost more than that. I believe it is pretty rare and the watch is in good shape.

Tough to find a number. Found prices on recently sold Tiffany sea dwellers and older subs, but not the 16610. They won't sell it, but if it's worth significant more than the standard sub, they should "give" it to the grandson and he should put it in a safe, not wear it.

If anyone has guidance or can provide someone I could talk to, it would be much appreciated!

To maintain any added Tiffany premium it is imperative that the dial, Tiffany Box and Tiffany warranty and receipts be kept in as pristine condition as the watch.

Values can be found all over the Internet and a Tiffany Sub with provenance would be worth more than a standard Sub or a Sub without provenance.

I would say 6k+ on a Tiffany dial for a private individual sale. Market on the 16610 has fallen. So has it on many watches.

You can call one of the larger auction houses in NYC, and most likely get one of their experts on the phone (in my experience, they're surprisingly accessible).

They might be able to clue you in on past sales of like items. This might not be a perfect indicator of current value, but it would be a good place to start.

I'd hazard to say its value hasn't gone down any! Depending on time since last sale, it might've gone up in multiples...

Great idea...thanks. Wasn't aware they'd be likely to hop on the phone. I'll try them tomorrow....

Hi guys. Thanks for the input. They were excited to hear that it's collectible and has more value than they thought and decided to get her properly serviced, no case polish, and to give it to the older son. He's promised to be a good steward.....cheers

Great watch. I hope he wears it a ton. And keep those boxes and paperwork in the closet and in great condition!
