Original owner GMT from 1968
My first sights into this Rolex world came at an early age for me.
As a child I can always remember having my uncle visiting our family in from Winnipeg. On the wrist of my fathers brother, was a beautiful watch, with a flashy red, and blue colour looking dial. :-) As a child I always would be gazing at uncle Gunthers wrist, staring at the bezel. Back then it was a shimmering Pepsi. That watch is what got me started into this crazy watch hobby of ours. Uncle Gunther was over for a BBQ yesterday, and I took some photos of his original 1968 MK I GMT with faded bezel. He always fancied a special watch back in the day. While visiting back home in Germany, he purchased this GMT in 1968 from the local Rolex dealer. He was never a water type person, so the submariner was off the list. Since he travels back and forth between Germany and Canada, the GMT was his watch of choice. Here are some quick pictures I took down at my dock. The dial is still in perfect shape. Hard to tell with that dirty crystal. Wish I remembered to give it a polywatch cleaning. The watch has had minimal polishing, and the bracelet has been replaced with a 93150. It's had regular servicing throughout its life, with its latest one at the same Authorised Dealer that I currently use. The dial plots and matching handset really haven't changed at all. Still the same white colour, as when it left the factory. He believes that the box and papers are still around in some of his unpacked boxes he still has from his many moves. Here is a group pic with its older brother from '61. On his next visit, I'll have to give his bracelet a brush touch up, polish of the crystal, and see if maybe he wants to pick out an insert from my collection to give him a change of scenery. Hope you enjoyed my little story! |

My story is similar to your uncle's, only mine is a 1969 GMT (#2.32m) purchased in early 1971. Both have the closed 6s and 9s on the date wheel, and unless mine was changed in the past during service at no extra charge it is the original. There is some argument about what is original for the GMT of this time period. BTW, the colors of the pic are a bit more saturated than in reality.

Thanks for the neat story and the cool watches. I am amazed these little machines can last as long as they do.
