Help Needed! 1680 or 5513

So.... I've going back and fourth looking and pondering for a first vintage sub and besides the obvious that one has a Date and the other doesn't and the like...

Ive started with a few GMT's now i'm looking at pre-owned sub's.... What would be your choice for your first vintage sub....? A 1680 white in all original condition or a 5513 also nice.... Also... Pondering wether to go full vintage into the 60's 70's time periods or into a more recent beginning of the 80's version of it...

Which is more collectible, iconic, endearing, etc... Oh, by the way, I already own a new Sub ND. So I am familiar with the sub in general, it's the "vintage" im looking at...

I'm triying to wrap my head around factors such as git dials, tropicals, buble'd, replacement, etc. hands and markers, also into polished cases and lugs, how to tell if the bracelet is original to the piece? papers? service history.... Needles to say its hard to navegate and its rather overwhelming....

Where would you go to source your first one and get a fair deal? I know its a big topic but I would like to know your opinion...

Thanks to all and hope you have a great week!

U can't go wrong with either, it's a matter of preference. Personally I like 5513 better because I like the clean dial. That said I have a red sub because it has the red in it. I recommend u check out the sticky for beumontmiller's excellent article on 5513. My advise for u is to buy the best condition u can afford. A case in point, I would choose a mint matte dial 5513 over beat up gilt ones.

I blame it on the autoconnect.

You are in trouble my friend.
I looked at both and picked the 1680 white because I loved the top hat, the cyclops.
I ended up later buying a 5513 anyway.
I also now want to decyclops my 1680 to a dome like the 5513 because I rather have it clean.

Tastes evolve/change I guess.
That being said, I love both and you can't go wrong with either really.

All the best!

I love both but finally got the 5513. Clear dial, symmetric, matte, 1520 movement, super dome plexiglass and rivet bracelet! I love it. I built it piece by piece and only need to replace the bezel because is not matching the same year!
With a 5513 cannot fail!!!
Good luck!

Do we have a good reference source for period correct dates for changes in 5513 subs? what I mean, how to know when it went from hi-hat to cristal and that type of information?

To know if Subtle changes in bezels, dials and lumes to be able to tell if a piece from such and such a year is kosher?

I'd do the 5513 unless it's a Red 1680.
