1978 Sub Red
Evening all. First post on the vintage forum. I have listed after the red sub for a while. My friend is willing to part with heirs for circa £8k which seems good. However it looks serviced to me, he has no original papers or Service history. I am worried if it a genuine red and worth buying. It does have the stainless bracelet also.

Hi Andy, if based on a correct year of 1978, it seems to be circa 5.4 to 5.8 Million series. there's no dismissal on having a red sub in that year, as the red sub was produced till circa 1979. This should make it a MK VII dial, but I have no info on this dial variant, perhaps more experienced forummers here might, or even correct any of the info I've provided here.. But I do know 1978, there were the white subs already, so just be cautious. In my (infant) dealings with vintages, if you're not 100% certain, just walk away.
But I'm pretty certain the bezel insert is a service insert, as the fonts as thinner, and the pearl looks to be a luminova pearl. Hope this helps. |

Andy,
I'm not sure what the source of the information is, that says this is a 1978 Sub, the serial numbers of Reds run to around the 4m mark, with a few examples seen a little above that. A 1978 1680 would have a serial number from around 548**** onwards and would have a White not Red Dial. It would be helpful to check the serial number, if you take the NATO off and look between the lugs at 6 0'Clock it's there. If you could post the first three numbers that would help. I'll leave comments about the watch itself to the 1680 Red experts. |

My friend isn’t too much into watches. He has been offered £8k but has seen them on eBay for £22k so he isn’t sure what he wants. But if I’m buying it I don’t want it to be a standard with a replacement dial. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If it is a 5.4 million serial it should be a white, not a red. Red writing ran up to very early 4 million serials. White writing already appeared at 4.2 million serials. They did NOT run up to 1979. No way A dealer might offer him £8k to switch dials with a white one and sell the red dial separately or even put in a correct case. If you are in the look for a while now, keep looking for the right one. This is the best advice I can give you. Good luck!

Need much crisper pics, and from all angles, to verify authenticity. The bezel insert is a replacement.
