Sub 14060 vs 14060M
OK I have decided to replace my black bay. I can't decide between a 14060 or a 14060M with 2 line text. The M seem to be about 1k dearer. Any thoughts on if it's worth the extra money for the modified movement? I guess 1k isn't a big deal if it's guna be more collectable or hold value better. But on the other hand 1700 out of pocket after the Tudor sells vs 2700, kinda hard to swallow.
Also, there are a couple places selling serviced watches for a premium vs say 600 less for a watch due for servicing(or unknown last service). Do you think it's better to get an unserviced watch and have it done myself or get one "turn key". Financially kind of a wash but servicing wouldn't be done by my choice of locations. This will be my first Rolex purchase. A no date sub is kinda my attainable grail watch. Any other advice on this purchase appreciated. Turtle!!!! 20170411_111309 by Norcalkid, on Flickr |

The difference in the movement modification isn't significant imo.....you should buy on condition and determine by aesthetics like luminova/tritium dial, cosc or two liner dial, etc. That's what I'd be looking at buying 14060s.

I bought a 14060 as my first Rolex and I love it. I have a 1997, the last year they used Tritium, with hopes that someday it patinas to a nice yellow. For me personally, I think it's perfect. Classic styling with modern movement and waterproofness.

The 14060 is very nice. Here is mine from 1991.
The two references are essentially the same, save for the caliber. Personally I love the tritium dials of the earlier 14060. Regarding serviced or not, if you get watch only, go with unknown service history and take it to RSC for an overhaul, pay a bit more than outsourcing it, but have peace of mind and get the service papers as well ;) If you buy full set, I would like one with documented service history at a small premium. There are a bunch right now for sale here. |

N Series
Those '91 14060 ones have the best patina. I had one for my first Rolex.

As others have said, the movement difference isn't that big of a deal. I woudln't base a decision between the two on that. Personally, I like the older 14060s with tritium...mine has started to patina nicely. I would go with the 14060 2 line from early/ mid-90s if you can find one in good condition.
I would also go with a "turn-key" as long as you are comfortable with who serviced whatever you plan to buy. |

I will choose the one in the best condition as possible first. If both are equally this is just a question of taste. I got a 14060M G in pristine condition recently but I could go for an early 14060 two line too.

Sounds like you are at least considering a future resell, if that's the case then condition is priority number 1, 2, and 3. Look for a full set if you can get it, then pay for a RSC service. The rest should be secondary to those things.

I don't plan to sell it, just don't want to get bent over if there comes a time when I have more need for $5000 than a watch. Or if I just decide to try something else, like in the case of my Black Bay. Bought for a fair price used, wore for almost a year, decided to try a sub, a year of wearing the BB cost me nothing after I sell. If I go this route I can try a different watch every year or so.

I'd be more concerned about condition than the M vs non M. I'd also prefer to have RSC do a service to know that all is okay with my purchase. Whichever way you go you can't beat the 14060(M)!

The time sets in opposite directions.
Clockwise for the M. Small thing but I prefer Clockwise. Also prefer 4 lines for 14060m. 2 lines are perfect on 5513.

Condition is paramount.
I would look for sharp lines to the case, not ones rounded by (over) polishing. Don’t fret too much if you locate a good specimen without papers. A trip to RSC will return the watch accompanied by more current documentation noting make, model and serial number. 14060(M) is a great watch. It was my first, and remains my favorite Rolex. I have a feeling that in the coming years, prices will increase just as they did for the 16710. Good luck! |
