before and after restoration.

i am getting this watch repaired tomorrow,i dont know how long it will take hopefully not to long or i will be pulling my hair out!it was my grandfathers and the watch is very important to me,anyway i thought i would post more pictures of the watch when fully restored as a kind of before and after thread, cant wait to see it in its full glory, the watch was bought in 1951,hopefully it will be on my sons wrist in another 60 years!

Now that is a beautiful watch. After it is restored don't wear it. Put it in a nice oak or maple display case. Pass it on to your son along with a new model but keep that old beauty under lock and key. You just don't see old ones like that anymore. This is why I love rolex. They have a great history and the models have only changed a little since they started making watches. Unlike other watch makers they change the look atleast once a year. That's why I invested in one rolex for myself. I'll probably only own the one but it was worth it cause it will last a lifetime and hopefully in 50 years it will look half as good as the one you have. Thanks for sharing the photos of your oldie but goodie.

Wow...

Truly "Old School" Classic!

Beautiful heirloom and so nice to see you taking good care of that legacy!

Can't wait to see the after pics!

I think a pic with your granddad, dad, you, and your son and that restored watch would become a nice addition to the heirloom legacy and add value to it!

Thanks for sharing!

That watch is in great shape to begin with. This one will be looking good when it comes back. What all did it need other than a polish, and maybe a servicing?

more info+a bit of fun on the side

thanks again for all your nice comments, its led me to write a bit about what i am hoping to have done to the watch,so here goes:
a full service,a new tube, and possibly the winder as the threads have deteriorated to the point where they cant screw up anymore (as you can see from the pictures),full clean and polish of the metal, and new glass,i also wanted the dial restored, but its in pretty good condition,so hopefully it needs a careful clean.
I have no idea of the cost yet (til monday of course, fingers crossed),we could all have guesses, mine is going to be £450,shot in the dark!(thats about $681

INFO TO GUESS THE PRICE
shop is a privately owned store, running for three generations in the picturesque town of abergavenny south wales,i used to work there 15 years ago, selling all kinds of lovely watches, they have sent the watch to a rolex trained watch maker/repairer they use for all their rolex repairs,i know no more than that sorry.

A few of you have said just clean the dial and not to restore it,i think i may pay heed to this advise,as i wouldn't want to change the look of the watch, a clean might be a better choice, when they ring me with the price,i will talk more in depth with them about it.

good news update

well the shop just phoned me,kind of took me by surprise,no problems to fix, here is whats being done and the final price:

case and bracelet restore polish

service

new glass

new tube (crown is fine)

not going with the dial restore,as since i have joined here i have gained knowledge through reading posts and peoples advise to me within this thread also,i just thought it would look better restored, but that was before joining here,i now obviously realise that would be a big mistake as their is no danger of bits flaking off the dial, devalue the watch, etc, but most of all it was the dial my grandfather looked at!

final price is: £253 =$380

price would have been £320=$480 if i hadn't worked there in the 90's,i am really pleased with the price, and i cant tell you all how excited i am,they said it will take about six weeks, but to phone in a month for an update, its going to be a long month thats for sure, but i have something to really look forward to now!
