AD wearing gloves - A little too ridiculous

when floor models get passed around too much, they DO get scratches eventually... I have purchased "new" watches from stores that have had to get light polishing. So I completely understand

Latex gloves??? If he used cloth or leather gloves I personally think has
a lot of class. I went to a swapmeet once and the guy handed me a pice with
cloth gloves out of his glass counter stand. Nothing wrong with that.

these are bnib, and must be cared for until it finds an owner who would be baptising the watch with scratches or whatever. until then, care for it unless you paid for it - then you can pretty much do whatever you want with it. just my two cents.

I think wearing gloves is neccissary. I saw this WG sub at an AD not so long ago, it was all covered in hairline scratches and fingerprints.. Not to presentable to a customer willing to spend the £21,000.00 price tag for it...

I think it's a great presentation, especially if you buy that particular watch knowing the chances that it was handled by the sales person showing the watch to other people.

I think wearing gloves when showing a watch to a customer borders onthe ridiculous. Comeon man, it is watch. Worst case, it gets fingerprints all over and he can wipe them off. But the ridiculous part is that he hands me the watch and I am not wearing gloves so what is the point???

I felt like saying "come on dude, what's the problem... you couldn't get into medical school?"

To me that shows class! It's all about the presentation. Do you also object to the little pads they place on the counters to lay the watch on??

I have no problem with this. It shows the AD is mindful of his merchandise and wants to take care of his product. A single scratch, noticed by a customer, could cost him some profit margin.

Many of us are perfectionists when doling out the kind of money we do for these watches. Wouldn't you want your next new Rolex to be as pristine as possible? I would!

I've seen most Rolex authorized dealers use that green glove as a polishing cloth. I assumed it was not to protect the watch, but a way to clean the watch before handing it to the customer.

That is actually true since the moment they wipe the crystal and bracelet, it is will be full of fingerprints once it is in our hands. Once you set it down to think about the timepiece, they start wiping down anywhere to make it shiny again while you think about whether to fork out $$$.

One time while looking at my next RG Daytona, the AD person even picked up my DD II and started wiping/polishing my watch, with no ill intent, of course.

After having checked out a bunch of ADs, I actually found it odd when one of the AD's did not use gloves when handling the merchandise for me to inspect...

True story. I was in Curacao in the Caribbean a few months ago. We went to a couple of local bars one day. My wife and I were then walking around town and they had a Mont Blanc store so we went in because I was thinking about getting a new pen. The girl showing us the pens put on white gloves. Now this was only for a $450 pen, not a Rolex or piece of jewelry. I was shocked because they never do this at the Mont Blanc stores in the U.S. Anyway, I am holding the pen looking at it and I all of the sudden I accidently dropped it on the marble floor. I felt terrible and offered to buy it. She looked at it and said it wouldn't be a problem since it appeared fine. I remember walking out of there thinking that instead of gloves they should be more worried about tourists that have a couple drinks in them.

I have a cloth I rest mine on at night.

I think sometimes people see things a bit too black and white when it comes to trying to keep your watches in good condition: I don't think trying to be careful with something that's so expensive and keep it looking nice is anything to be ashamed of.

Not everyone wants to treat a Rolex like a hammer. Just like I don't open my car door into the side of my garage every time I get out.

And to the point about the AD wearing gloves-I'd say 75% of the watches I see in display cases look beat up and very sorry looking. I realize a lot of this wear comes from customers, but I've seen PLENTY of sales associates manhandle their new watches without an ounce of care. I'm not sure corporate would approve of the breathe/wipe vigorously on shirt method for making a $12k Submariner look presentable.
