Can you imagine the horror of the unmanly, 6'6" Sir Edmund Hillary only wearing a 34mm watch!!

I love my DJ36. I have a ~6.5" wrist so it wears perfectly. I do notice it's becoming the unofficial ladies size but honestly I love the hidden clasp jubilee and wouldn't want it any other way.

The 36 Datejust looks great on many men. It is all about how large your wrist is.

I wore DJ36 16233 for 15 years oblivious that fashion was changing.

When I wore a 40mm Sub for two weeks I realized I couldn't go back to 36mm on my 7.5" wrist. It suddenly looked tiny. I had to switch out my beloved TT tapestry dial DJ36 for a DJ41.

DJ36 is now, I'm sure, sold more as a women's watch. Just look at the dial choice and concealed clasp, same as DJ31's.

I would have preferred not to spend the extra £6,000 but the subconscious pressure to go bigger got me.

Are u sure it was your subconscious? Not the marketing from Rolex (which is second to none btw) that got you to spend the extra £6000? I can see Rolex smiling from here.

I’m not so sure. I think 36mm still looks better even on an 8” wrist. It’s really about whether you prefer a lighter watch and/or you have a more vintage style.

Dude, 36mm is the classic size for a men's Datejust.

It doesn't matter how big or small you are, 36mm looks great!

I have a 36 date just and 36 daydate and personally they just look too small now. Now I know trends change so anything can happen. I’ve got very small wrists but I wear a bigger watch (Biggest 44 AP and pandering) and I don’t think they look out of sorts. It’s how you carry it. I love my 36mm I get them out have a try on wind up play around take a few photos and put back. They are very pretty watches. I guess that’s why girls are leaning towards them now
I have a feeling they will come back big time one day because a classic will always be, Maybe for my son (who’s 9) to start where I left off
Fashion i.e very big watches can change . Classics remain classics forever
I think the first rolex anyone notices would be a datejust 36 or a sub. I remember an old boy in a shop with short sleeves and he had a 36mm bi metal yellow gold datejust must be 30 odd years ago. Now I can’t remember birthdays or peoples names but I remember this guys watch thinking what’s that and an attraction to he. If alive I should hunt him down and either thank him or finish him for costing me a fortune

I have a 7” wrist, the 36mm DJ is perfect. The Jubilee bracelet also ads to the impression of the Watch.

Part of the problem is that people have started wearing their watches low for some reason, allowing them to fall below the wrist bone (which also causes the crown to dig in.) When the watch is closer to the hand, it looks smaller, and I think that has forced sizes up.

It reminds me a bit of the beginning of sagging pants in the 90s, which led to really baggy jeans. Who knows how long this trend will last??

Ryan - Welcome to TRF! I'm 6'4 & 225lbs and my daily wear is the pic in my avatar. It is a vintage 1971 model 1601. Gets lots of looks and complements. It is a classic (IMO) and not is not overstated.

Happy shopping!

I wore this Datejust 16234 (1989) everyday before moving on to a Submariner then a Yacht Master. The DJ 36 was a gift from my dad who wore it for many years. I still keep it for sentimental reasons. It looks tiny on my wrist now. Sometimes I put it on around the house, but back in the watchbox it goes, never even seeing the light of day.

I also have this Day Date 118238 36mm, which I have only worn a handful of times in the 15 years I've owned it. It has more to do with my lack of confidence to wear something so flashy, but even in the rare times I feel daring enough, the small diameter discourages me, and back in the box it goes too.

These days I wear a DSSD which is 44mm, and I can't explain it, it just feels right. Never been one to religiously follow fashion trends, and some will say it looks oversized on me, but go figure, I just feel good wearing it.

The obsession for bigger and taller seems more of a US thing to me, not so much in the old world/Asia.

On the original question: No, it is not too little - it's a classic size DJ. Imho modern watches are often too big and they have hence lost some of their charm e.g. AP 15400.

I have a 7inch wrist and have no problems with my 36m OP, 36m DJ or 36m Tudor BB.

I agree with others the 36 looks great on most. Classic size. For you guys with the newer 116200 versions and similar, how is the lume? I'm thinking of getting one of these, but would like to see what time it is at 4 in the morning when I'm in bed. Does the lume hold well into the night?

No, 36mm is NOT too small for a man. It might be for a man having doubts about his manhood. And, yes, anything much larger is stupid.

That OP is great. I am a big explorer fan but prefer stick hands over Mercedes hands so that piece is very interesting. Which of your 36 watches gets the most wrist time? Nice collection.

Really? Why do you think that is? You'd think a brand like Rolex would nail something as easy as lume.

I think it's time to close forever such threads about watch sizes and move on to relevant things. 36mm is fine for 99.9% of men. The rest, I've got very little respect for.

41 hundert percent !!!!!!

After one year of almost thinking about it everyday I came to a conclusion. That 41 is the way to go. And I have tiny wrists for a man. Why ? Because date just whether u like it or not is a sport watch. U can argue anything but if this watch looks good only on the steel bracelets then it’s hundred percent a sport watch. Unlike the Cellini for example that looks good on any leather bracelet ... so if it’s a sport whatch then it should be larger ... yes you could argue there are some elements of a dress watch ... but over overall it’s a sport watch that looks dressy .. still a sport watch though. Also it designed in a way that the bezel will take away a lot of space so the dial itself is even smaller on the 36 ... the watch presence is not small but the dial itself is tiny. Then you have the best thing in the world the fluted bezel and that thing is so beautiful on the 41. Becuse on the 41 it has the size to be noticed and on the 36 it’s just a little part of the overall design. And the biggest problem with the 36 is that on the top of ur wrist u will see a lot of the bracelet it self ... but unlike female watches where it’s mainly a bracelet and a little watch added to the bracelet a mans watch should be mainly a watch and less bracelet visable. Also the trading of the lugs of the 41 looks much better starting with 21 and going narrow.. it’s almost always straight on the 36 which I don’t like ... and the presence of the 41 is just amazing ! I realized a date just will be a a dress watch .. if u wanna a good dress watch go with jlc master .. Rolex Cellini line ... glasshuete senator .. a lange if you are into hand wound ...( I wouldn’t go with th patek for the reasons u don’t get a discount and the movement is small and outdated ) fp journe cb ir u have that money ... but let the datejust be what it is a sport but elegant watch ... that is cool enough to go on a date with .. some people write stuff like oh datejust 2 was too big for a suit in the office ... well ofourse ... and just because Churchill got one as a present or a Afro American leader like Luther king was wearing one doesn’t mean style suddenly disappears and u can wear a sport bracelet in an office suit .. it’s doesn’t fit . So in today’s world u can have a lange in 37 and it looks fine but 36 is too small for a watch like date just becuse it just doesn’t fit no Longer .. but don’t forget this is coming from a 29 year old .. for my dad which wears a 33 mm golden quartz even the 36 would be too big because we kind of expect him to wear this watch ... but we do expect a young male to wear a 41 mm watch ... otherwise we will question him (or his oriantion) ... it’s just style ... nothing personal ... but if u feel like the 36 is ur thing becuse it wears lighter on a wrist then this is a big factor .. and as much as I hate how bulky and heavy my hulk wears I’d rather sacrifice the comfort to be proud to wear a watch that I love esthetically ... I realized I would be ashamed to wear 36 ... I will get a 41 flouted jubilee blue dial with diamonds ... and some tim later I will get a two twone 36 with yellow gold and white dial Roman numerals ... cuz if he latter one I can always enjoy like a classic piece when two tone was trendy but also give I to my gf one day and she can also enjoy it ... but the 41 mm is a must for a man

Reviving this old thread because I found a really good, *undistorted* photo of what the Datejust 36 looks like on an average man's wrist. In real life, this is what a 36 looks like on my wrist, a little over 7". No value judgement here. This doesn't work for me but if you like the look, absolutely go for it. The problem is that all the mobile phone / wide angle photos emphasize the dial, so it's hard to actually see how the watch wears. Credit to Monochrome (and they have a bunch more pics on their site):
