Those of us with dodgy Explorers, evidently accepted by Rolex as a mistake, need to stick together. Come on ladies and gents, maintain that stiff upper lip and carry on like nothing has happened. We'll get through this if we stick together.

They went and screwed up a perfectly good watch. I could live with the longer minute hand, but the clown face paint on the 3-6-9 just goobers it up.

Ref. Nr. still the same (214270). Does that mean the hands will be replaced with the longer ones at service? What about the dial? I wouldn't mind the longer minute hand, actually I would prefer it, but I'd rather keep the white gold filled numerals dial. Any info on that?

I can't see Rolex swapping the hands over - no chance, IMO. You'll need to find a friendly watchmaker with a Rolex account if you want the longer hands

See above. I think I feel the same way you do i.e. that I'd prefer to keep the dial I've got but just have the longer hands. I wonder how much a set would cost? Knowing Rolex, many, many hundreds of £s/$s/others.

Aren't they admitting their mistake by introducing the longer and bolder hands? How Rolex are gonna deal with this? Two set of hands for the same reference?

I do not have a short hand Expy 1, I wish I did. Honestly, I prefer this model over the 2016 one.

Are you certain you want the longer hand? On the proper Explorer, the minute hand lume lines up at the edge of the hour marker. On the new Explorer the lume overlaps the marker. That sloppy design feature would bother me.

Totally agreed! The minute hand lume overlaps the marker is something that bother me too! And i also prefer 3 6 9 in white gold rather than lume.

Agreed! I have no problem keeping my Explorer (or my Black Bay, for that matter).

I like what they've done, but in my opinion, the old 3-6-9 in white gold adds an element of class to the watch - kind of distinguishing it from a Ranger, and the hands to me seem to have the ideal level of balance and discretion for the watch. In no way is legibility even remotely compromised, including after many hours of darkness. A large part of the allure of the Explorer is its true ability to be a watch for all seasons (not like a Submariner, which, Bond fanboys and retro-advertisement aficionados aside, is a big block of a divers watch), something which may now be diminished by its new-found sportiness. Now, if they had introduced an anti-reflective coating, I'd have been miffed....

Thanks for changing, Rolex. You've made my "short-handed Explorer" all the more appealing!

I am perfectly happy with my "short hand" Explorer. Far too much has been made of that little detail so there's no need to discuss it further.
As far as the 3,6,9 lume goes...I've never had occasion to need to know the time while sitting in the dark so I don't really care about that either.
Add the fact that this was my first Rolex at nearly age 65 and it's a lifelong keeper, a watch I love to look at dozens of times each day, and get excited about whenever anyone asks me for the time. It's one that will eventually be passed down to my son and then grandson.
So, am I content with my "short hand" Explorer? You bet I am!

I just purchased my Explorer I from an AD on March 3 thinking they wouldn't update this anytime soon. Oh well, I have to say I don't regret my purchase, as I dislike the lume on the 3,6,9. As my wife says, makes it looks like a Timex. The WG makes it look classy, hence why the Explorer I is a good dress & casual watch. I do like the longer hand but I don't care for the thickness on the new one. Not trying to justify my purchase, just my opinion. I am glad that Rolex listens to its valued customers though, just wish they left out the lume.

I agree on the 3-6-9 lume. It would look better on the AirKing in my opinion. Should have left it off the updated Explorer. Agree with you on the thickness of the hands also.

Doesn't matter to me in the end as I am quite happy with what I have now.

I'm OK with the 'dwarf' explorer but this Daytona they just sold me has a funny looking ceramic bezel... almost looks like steel!

I think this is exactly the type of thread we will see if Rolex ever puts out a new Submariner with thinner lugs. The complainers will say Rolex learned from their mistakes, blah blah blah.

Companies make changes sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse. I like the new Explorer with the lume, and longer hands. But that doesn't change the fact that I like the "older" model as well.

Love the one you're with... if not you can usually trade in...
