Sub 5513 or Explorer 214270?

Suggestions please. I purchased my early 1980s 5513 new in Zurich. Wore daily for 15+ years. Great watch. Been overhauled recently. Don't wear much anymore because the Subs are so ubiquitous and I have several other dive watches. And I don't feel I need to impress anyone anymore. Another reason I don't wear it is because it has appreciated signficantly (837% to be exact compared to what I paid for it based on what I have been offered on a trade in).

I'm considering trading for a 2015 Explorer (plus I would receive a nice check from the dealer). I'd like a dressier, less cliche daily wearer. I wear a suit 4 days a week. I'm sold on the durability and "less is more" aspect of the Explorer. I also really like the Tudor Heritage Ranger.

My concern is I will probably regret parting with the Sub which has sentimental value to me but then again what good is a watch that does not get worn?

Thoughts?

Keep the Sub and get a Ranger, is my advice.

I'd forget about the modern Rolex (any modern Rolex) and keep the 5513.

As you said, if you don't wear it what good is it? Time to go....take the profits and get something you will, and will enjoy. You have other dive watches.

The Explorer may not get the bandwidth and level of cheerleading here on TRF as the Sub does, but is exactly as you say; less cliche', simplicity of aesthetic design, no numbered bezel is dressier and adapts to suit-wearing like a chameleon, and as durable or more than anything Rolex makes.

It's your wrist, and from what you've said, go for the switch.

I would add, maybe give the Sub to one of your children.

Thanks for the input thus far. I'm sure my 16 yr old son would love the Sub but in my opinion that is way too much watch for a kid.

I agree about that part.
Personally would keep the sub myself, however if it no longer sings, then I guess it has lost its sentiment.
214270 is also a great watch.

Would love to see pictures of your 5513.

KEEP THE SUB.

You will absolutely come to regret it one day if you get rid of it. What a great piece to pass down to your son one day in the future, even if it's many years down the road.

You're over the Sub. Sell it to me! ;-)

But, really, wait for the new 2016 Explorer.

Less is more is not about current exp2. It's a lot bigger, heavier than your sub, has maxi dial with that huge carrot on it = more watch presence on your wrist.

The thought that you would have even the slightest regret would cause me to keep it. You'll never be able to replace your first. It's been serviced, I'd put it away, maybe wear it on special occasions or if you're feeling nostalgic. Think of all the things that watch has been through with you. If at a later time when your son is ready, what an amazing gift for him or even a grandson.
I'd save and get the new Explorer when you can.
