Rough date for a vintage Air King

Hi all,

I've purchased a nice vintage Air King that I'm really pleased with.
All I know about is that is a 5500?
The serial number is 892xxx

I've looked online and I'm a bit confused - I get a 50's year and a 60's year?
I'm interested in knowing so I can work out the movement info.
Any thoughts?

It's a known fact that Rolex began renumbering their serial system as indicated below. Thus, the reference serial points to two different dates. The problem then becomes that the model was available during both periods you are asking (1952 ish and 1962). So in looking at the dial, points to a 1962. I'll do a little research to see if I can find more..

10000 to 300000 .........1953 to 1957
(At this time Rolex started the numbering system back at 10000. This time period also saw the start of the "Roman Numeral" dating system explained above.)

Actually, according to Beckertime, the 5500 was released in 1957.. So that should be the clue for the later date..

Thanks for the info and link there! I'm really enjoying my Air-King; it keeps really great time!

Cheers
