People are willing to pay $27k for a simple, (in my view) mediocre looking, steel watch, what's another $10k? Craziness is all relative :-)

Moreover, how many extra Nautiluses (in steel) do you reckon it’d take to satiate demand?
My gut instinct tells me it’s unlikely to be any more than 300, but let’s be generous and say it’s 500.
This is what I think a lot of people are forgetting. It's easy to get consumed on boards which cater to WIS, but in real life, this watch is relatively unheard of. The desire for this watch is in no way even close ot that of say a steel Daytona, however PP's production numbers are way lower than Rolex so the demand is still there. I still think that (as long as the Nautilus continues production) the waiting lists will clear in the coming 4-5 years. It's just simple math, there isn't some steady desire for these that has always been a problem, this came out of NOWHERE due to the internet popularity and it's hyped to the extreme right now. As I've stated previously, I find it funny that a mere 5 years ago you could walk in numerous PP stores across the globe and easily find a blue Nautilus.

My opinion-this is hype, it will not last, just like everything that trends nowadays. I think you'd be somewhat of a schmuck to pay $10k+ premium on a watch at its peak that will inevitably come back down to MSRP. Not to mention, approx $40k for a basic, stainless, three handed sport watch is mind boggling to me ($40k is a completely different realm of watches in my mind, all being PM). However, if you've got that many zeroes in your bank account, more power to you.

Have my vintage Patek Calatrava grail still here for tux events.

So, anyone have a Patek enamel hand decorated desk clock for sale? It'll make Russ happy too
A handcraft item would be beautiful, not something we see often on here

It's a nice watch, but I think demand is fuelling demand.

I think there is also another reason. Before the 40th anniversary the 5711 wasn't that hard to get, although there was a small wait. Some people held off buying in case the 5711 was updated. When that didn't, there was pent up demand that led to an increase in people wanting to buy it.

That's a good point. I sold mine thinking I would prefer the updated version for sure. Silly me assuming the decade old watch in need of some updates was getting replaced lol

rofl:

Yes that one Russ.

A shame they didn't make some crazy error like leaving off the entire PP logo. Might have been a collectible!

I have dealt with Govberg many times and always found their pricing to be competitive and service excellent. I think this is simple supply/demand and finding a new 5711 is very difficult. I'm not necessarily saying that I would pay that much for that watch but I do believe that is what the market value is right now and there are buyers out there at this price

I was at a well known U.K. Dealer today who offered £26000 for a blue 5711 and grey gave buyers at just over £29500.00 which is $38350. They also mentioned they have sold 2 of the 40th Anniversary 5711P for £127000 each which is $165000

That guy tim can describe a watch in detail like nobody else on the planet lol

Imagine if he was the announcer at a strip joint. It would be a riot.

Agreed. Tim is a savage when it comes to describing a watch and anything watch related for that matter.

It's crazy, even the white dial is commanding a premium nowadays...

Must be the 40th anniversary craze, and to think that a few years ago I passed on one at at an AD with a small discount!

5712A is also commanding a premium but the premium is not as high as 5711A. For example one grey dealer was charging £ 29950 for 5711A blue dial (MSRP £18030) with box and papers (2017) and the same dealer was charging £31750 for 5712A (MSRP £24120) with box and papers (2017)

Are you guys seeing a spike in interest for earlier incarnations of the nautilus? I have a yellow gold 3800/1 hanging around that I find myself wearing very little for fear of scratching a model from a family in vogue.

Look at Takuya who has a white 5711 and a 5712 on his site. The 5711 is going for $4k plus premium so imagine the premium for a blue while the 5712 is only around $2k plus premium. If I had the $ I'd buy his 5712 right now since the cost would essentially be msrp plus tax for me.

One would assume the tide raises all boats. Sounds cool have any pictures of it?

The 5711 white dial, formerly the ginger-haired stepson, is selling at a premium, the blue at a huge premium, SS Rolexes can hardly be found in many countries and looks like it is now spreading even to Asia... keep your eyes peeled, people, for the fourth horseman...

I don't believe the Rolex story is correct because my squash buddy wanted a SS sub with date and he wanted it in time for his wedding later this month. I got an assurance from my AD friend (non Rolex) that he could get one within 6 weeks however this wasn't good enough for my pal who then telephoned the Official Rolex AD in Leeds. He gave them the chat about the wedding etc which seemed to impress them and they managed to pull one out of the back room which he's now wearing for squash.

It seems that if you need a SS Rolex for a wedding then the waiting list might not be an issue.
