2 new Rolex in a week.

So last week I managed to get hold of the 126600 Sea-Dweller. Lovely watch great proportions nothing not to like. Idea was to put it to one side for my son who has just been born. I am itching to size it, remove all stickers and wear it though.

Decided I wanted a new watch for me so after a bit of ringing round found a 116710 BLNR, collecting it tomorrow.

My dilemma, which do I keep new for my son for 2038 when he'll be 21?

The SD would make an excellent time capsule.

I think it's a great idea.

I bought an LVc when my daughter was born. It will be hers if she wants it although she may well not. Either way I always preferred the idea of her growing up seeing me wearing it and knowing how much I liked it before she had it.

I would rather be given a watch that lived its life with my dad and had all the dings and scratches to show for it.

Just to add, he will get all of my watches eventually but I think I specifically want him to have a new one in his name.

Great Idea , You could always have the case back engraved also ,with a message to him from you & gift it to him on his 21st .Not sure which one I would keep for him though, or the watch you choose will suit his style or taste when he grows up . So might be better to choose the one you like the most & wear it yourself in the meantime . I have a number of Rolex in my collection and my (Adult) Children couldn't be less interested in them, & cant understand why I just don't wear one watch .So I will probably pass onto my Grandchildren ,who will most likely be even less interested in them.

Wear the watches and enjoy them. Discuss with your son as he grows up that one of these watches are his when he gets old enough.

Voted 'neither'. Imho seems a bit pointless keeping a new watch for all that time.

Well by that time it certainly wont be new, it will just be unused and unloved.

Great idea! but it will be born in 2018 and both these are 2017, I'll have to get a Daytona C next year

True. I'm quickly thinking that I will enjoy them both and then when the time comes if he is at all interested ask which he wants.

If for whatever reason he isn't interested I'll happily keep them both and give him the monetary value.

It's thoughtful for sure. But he may not even be into watches at all or prefer the latest wearable tech or something like that. I think saving that money and letting it grow to a little more than double (at ~5%) would be a more exciting gift for him. Or if it was something he saw you love and enjoy wearing that you gave to him at that time ... it would mean much more to him than just being a nice NOS watch.

Wear the watches so they have your DNA on it and then it will be more meaningful to him. If he's a good boy and studies hard then one day father and son should go to an AD and pick a new watch together for him, I can only imagine how styles and designs will have changed by then, so not sure the NOS BLNR, another old watch by then, will appeal to him. Your SD should suffice.

I think about that also, but my sons are not really in to watches, and they are old enough to appreciate them. One has expressed a liking for my DateJust, and they all would like a nice watch, but are not clamoring for one.
Since you have them I'd wear them and see what happens, 20 plus years is a long time in to the future.

Wear them both and enjoy them. When it's time to make one of them his, get a full service and pass it on.
Over the years I'm sure you'll get an idea of which he likes best by seeing you wear them.
Oh, and congrats on two great pick-ups!!

Wear it. Your son will appreciate the history. Believe me, kids notice watches. I know that when my watches get passed down to my kids, they will appreciate it far more because they associate it with me. They do the little things kids (and we) do - check out the lume, mess with the bezel, listen to the tick tick tick. And they do them while the watch is on our wrists.

The sentiment of passing down a new one is nice, but it has no history or memory associations that way and you might as well buy them a new one at that point.

I don't know if the blue on the BLNR will make it through time as a defining classic. I imagine others will strongly disagree.

A lot of the older subs for example have, which are just plain classic black dial and bezel.

But I'd go for option three above. Wear 'em both and give him the one he prefers when the time comes.

I think it's a little silly to 'set aside' a watch for a child (especially one who is not in at least his teens and you know if he/she enjoys watches). One has no idea what they will like, and if they're even into watches when they become of age, they may hate that styling. That's why you have guys posting on the forums asking 'should I sell the watch my dad gave me'?

Exponentially better advice to either 1. Wear it and see if he wants it, 2. Starting a fund with the exact same cash, and have more than enough to buy him one when he or she gets of age.

I think you should wear it. Your son can then know you wore it rather than having just bought it thereby making it more special. My POV as a 21yr old.

This!

I've already racked up countless pictures in only a couple years of me and my son, while wearing the sub I plan to give to him. Knowing I've regularly worn the watch and seeing the pictures to go along with it will surely be more meaningful than taking a box out of a safe and handing it to him.

Wear it. Then tell him the stories behind the wear and tear when u give it to him. I bought a 116613lb to pass on to my son. Even had a message engraved on the case back for him. I wear it with no fear so I will have stories to pass down with it.

Servicing watches can bring them to like new condition if that's important to you. I'm certain the watch will mean more to your son if it was used by you and he realizes your love and appreciation for it. I say wear away!!!!

I agree with the others, that I'd appreciate a watch worn all the time by my dad more. Seeing him wear it, and then giving it to me would really make me bond with it, as there is a deep connection to him through me wearing it. Additionally, the nicks/scratches only make it more memorable and special. Sure you can't predict if your son will be a WIS or even like the style, but no one is born a WIS...
