Need some help identifying a Daytona....

Hi all!

As a young 5 year old kid, I always admired my uncle and the watch he was wearing. a tough sailor, traveling and exploring the world. When he was promoted 1st chief engineer on a ship in the sixties, he bought himself this watch. I had no clue what the brand was, did not even think of value for any watch. The watch and my uncle were made for each other....So when I think about the watch, I think about my uncle. When I think about my uncle, I think about the watch.

Now, 45 years later, he recently gave me this watch. Needless to say that for me it has a priceless emotional bond.

Today, I went to a shop to get it cleaned, by a certified Rolex dealer specialized in vintage watches.
The lady who helped was speechless, when she saw the watch. a 38mm Daytona..it seems to be a rare watch and has great value?
Well, I would like to know more about the watch, any information is welcome an greatly appreciated....Anyone who can tell me what I have?
Thanks in advance! Blue's.

Thanks! Tamiya...seems that I have a Paul Newman Daytona...!!!? Wow and awesome indeed..!
There seems to be a difference in the outer ring saying: 'units per hour'. Mine is at the crown... Some are at 1300 hours. Anyone knows what the difference is? Later or earlier productions?

Yes. Your bezel seems to be a bit later. Could you remove the bracelet and let us know if it is stamped 6262 or 6239 between the upper two lugs? If 6262 your bezel is correct and not a later service part.

If all is correct it is close to a 200k watch. Make sure you treat it that way.

You may want to compare it against this fine example sold in 2013.

Thanks roh123!

It is now in the shop to give me an estimate about service needed, that will take a few weeks. Just called them to also look up the stamp mark....

I will keep you posted!
Feeling lucky....!!!

Just make sure no visible parts being changed. Also; i hope they are used to handling this kind of watch as mistakes could be very costly. :)

This x 100!
Please make sure nothing gets changed and that the watch is with a very reputable and trustworthy watchmaker. I would not hesitate to go as far as taking it back and sending it to the likes of LAWW/ABC etc if I had any doubts.
Very few people I would trust with that kind of watch.

Also, huge huge congratulations on such a marvellous watch. To have sentimental value with a watch of that caliber is just amazing. Wear in best health, and keep taking pictures for us!

Thank god it was an honest lady and you didn't come on with a story about how you sold it for $5k or something!

What an awesome piece to be given!

Wow, this is an unbelievable inheritance. Please, PLEASE consider carefully who handles your watch. It's worth a fortune (literally) and in the hands of someone who is not well versed in the vintage / antiquities world, they can do thousands of dollars worth of damage - despite having the best of intentions.

In all fairness, the watch in question does not appear to have been babied a single day of its life. That does not excuse anyone from treating it carelessly in any way (now).

Wow, I had to re-read that OP just to make sure I wasn't mistaken..... Original, Paul Newman, with who? Oh no.... I would follow the advice here and let LAWW or someone very skilled work on this piece.

amazing. subscribing.

It looks to be in great condition. Great dial, sharp edges on case and bezel. Disregard the scratched crystal and the somewhat worn (original folded) bracelet it is a top piece.

Wow! Amazing! Congrats! With all due respect to your current watchmaker, I would immediately retrieve your watch and do some research to find a specialist. And why did they say it would take a few weeks just to give you an estimate? That sounds like a long time just for an estimate/evaluation. I'm nervous for you.

I would get that watch back ASAP!
I'm sweating just thinking about what can possibly happen to it in the hands of a non-vintage specialist watchmaker!
PLEASE do yourself (and us) a favor and get that watch back in your hands ASAP!
