Hard To Sell A Rolex ?

Skimming at the classifieds there are some reasonably like new watches offered for sale that have been there for over a month with no questions and being bumped. This makes me think that it is extremely hard to sell a watch for the average Joe. I have never sold a Rolex before how hard is it ?

It's not hard to sell - if the price is right / fair.

SS sub = easy

gold sub = harder

diamond encrusted platinum day date = near impossible

there can't be questions posted. Only the seller can post to those ads.

There is a like new Deepsea D Blue being offered at about $ 1,000 below retail with an offer by the seller for face to face meeting and verification in the Bay area I believe. Now if I wanted this watch I would most certainly meet up and if satisfied buy. I most likely would be too judging by the pics he has posted. This really called my attention. This is usually a watch that sells for over retail in the UK.

As a private seller, you'll get less until you've developed trust in a community.

The trusted sellers will get a premium over private sellers for obvious reasons.

Very hard to sell unless face to face at a bank. Otherwise someone has to take a huge risk and why should you on an expensive item, better to pay more for some trust.

That depends.

Have you sold watches before?
References?
What form of payment?
Condition of the watch?
Box and papers?
Clear images of the watch and all its sides?
Clear description of condition?
Is it a popular watch or not?

Good luck!

Not easy. I tend to flip a watch ever so often and it takes time to unload. I currently have one listed at the lowest price on the sales forum and it still hasn't moved. It took me 6 months to move a Panerai last year. It's tough as a private seller. Local cash deal is probably the best move for both parties.

People seldom buy the cheapest bottle of wine on a restaurant. People get skeptical to stuff that is the cheapest. They get the next. Try to increase the price of your watch to be the second cheapest watch. ;)

I have had a good amount of success selling the watches that I've moved on from here on the forum. I do believe though that being an active member with lots of positive feedback helps a private seller a LOT.

My guess is that many folks with no prior sales and low post counts do experience a hard time because it is a lot more risky doing business with no track record.

No Doubt seller history & feedback helps
The Trusted sellers on TRF are trusted for good reason - they communicate well describe and represent accurately... Prices are a bit higher at times
Do not forget they have some overhead costs - to run their business

always some negotiating room - doesn't hurt to ask

As said - price it fairly - it will sell

I agree. I think it also has to do with one’s comfort level in making a private purchase as opposed to buying from an AD. My first two purchases were from an AD before buying from a Trusted Seller on this forum.

Once you've moved 10 or so watches with flawless transactions on this board, I think it is much easier to sell.
If he has it for 1500 over your price, he might even give you the price you are asking. :)

Hmmm..."J. Smith" seems too good to be true, tread carefully. Selling is all about trust and honesty, plus the higher the price the longer it'll take. I suppose it easier to just pay more at a trusted seller such as DavidSW, but that doesn't mean other low volume or first time sellers are not honest. Just will require more due diligence, pictures, phone calls etc to arrive at the same comfort level. Indeed, it's hard to wire hard earned money to someone you've never met. The seller should make sure their ads are as complete and professional looking as possible. Good luck! Cheers!

Great post.

I think most people that can afford to buy or sell a watch that costs as much as a Honda are smart enough to handle a lot of these steps. I've got a great watch that is tough to find, priced well below what it would cost from an AD with tax. I'm sure when the right buyer comes along which shouldn't take that long where I am priced, they'll want to do their vetting of me, which I totally understand. I can verify who I am, where I work, where I bought it from, and have proof of purchase. Obviously I'm not wasting time or sharing any of this information with Jonathon/Jonathan - I just thought that email was amazing and worth sharing.

First couple of sales absolutely have to be the hardest.

Could be that your user name is the reason for lack of desire to make a face to face transaction....

Price it right and it'll sell quickly. I didn't get as much as TS' were asking for my SubC, but I sold it still at a very fair price for the Canadian market (I specifically excluded the US for customs reasons.)

People are also forgetting that what the TS posts the price at, is not necessarily what it actually exchanges hands for.
