My Patek 5196 r recognized tonight
Went to dinner... a table was seated next to us... two guys were debating what “patek” I was wearing.... I never thought a 5196r would be recognizable from a table away. They had apple or Samsung watches on, as I looked after hearing their debate. They concluded I was wearing a 5296 , but I think that has a date display. In any case, it was quite remarkable, as this would be the first time anyone has noticed my patek. it always has flown under the radar before (I presume). I wear this piece only to nice places... despite the guys thinking it was a 5296, I’m amazed they knew it was a patek and what a patek is. I say this not because I’m a snob. I believe most don’t know timepieces nor care.
This is one of those “I just thought I’d share “ threads. It was weird to hear my patek being discussed. I guess I’m not the only person outside this forum that a) wears watches b) generally knows the models etc ... Have fun |

Interesting to say the least.
I would expect 99% to have no idea what a Patek is. Of the remainder, 0.2% would know it’s a Calatrava. The rest just pick Nautiluses (Nautili?)

+1 The calatrava line requires some decent knowledge

I’m guessing they’re in the jewelry business. I’m still amazed. I wear a submariner all the time, two tone, and no one has ever commented on it. My reverso also... I don’t wear pieces for recognition, but often wish I could talk about watches with people I meet. It hasn’t happened yet... other than a coffee house where a guy brewing coffee was wearing a beautiful seamaster and I had a Pepsi ... we talked a few minutes about watches. Was fun. Last night surprised me because a callatrava is way under any radar. I’ve had jewelers not know what my 5196 was (they sold shinola watches ).

Is your watch on a calatrava cross deployant buckle?
That is easier to recognize than the watch. |
