Dome/Super Dome 5513
The 5513 acrylic lens, when was the super dome or dome lens fitted?Or was this another Rolex "Whatever stock they have they fit".What are the different shapes of acrylic available?I noticed that some of the maxi dial have a fairly flat acrylic.Anyone can help me on this or direct me to a website?
Thanks |

Tropic 19 is correct but a T39 superdome can be made to fit.

I would get a RSC service crystal of new manufacture to insure a watertight watch

Like with most things Rolex there are variants, the T19 was originaly a dome or superdome, but over time stock off these crystals that were originally made in the 70's has dried up - NOS can still be found, but you can't guarantee the seal as they start to crack and breakdown over time.
Now there are service crystals, these are slightly domed but are nothing like the orginal T19's, as for the T39 you could also go down this route but the crystal wasn't made for the Sub. Have a search on the forum, as there is a thread with some great pics showing the various types of T19's http://rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=68579 Here an original T19 superdome Last edited by PhilM; 27 April 2011 at 03:39 AM.. I have seen some reproduction T19's and sent one along with my 5513 to Bob Ridley, he told me he would not trust its water tightness so I went with a ROLEX replacement. I wonder why someone out there has not made an exact high quality repro of the original. Sure the purists would scream, but for those who want to wear them for what they were made for it would be perfect

heres a post i did for someone else who asked a year or two ago.
a couple of people asked if there was an illustration between 5513 different crystals, so popped up to the bank and grabbed a couple out today, scans aren't the best but they illustrate the point hopefully. My take is approximately ...and it is approx ... superdomes to early /mid 70's ...domes to early 80's first is a modern RSC supplied tropic 19, straight sides then shallow domed top. second is a ealrier 'domed' tropic 19, not much straight side walls and as it says in the title domed and rounded top. third is the superdome, the biggest most pronounced , bit of straightish sides and bigger dome hope thats helps - but please please remember 99% offered for sale are aftermarket passed off as genuine. oh and superdome on a watch shot :) i still maintain that 99% of supposed NOS old style domed and super domed crystals are absolute fakes...and i agree that domes/supers are for show not for go ...if you want to go swimming...showering or even regularly walking in monsoon rain ...fit a service glass. |

Is that an aftermarket superdome on your mil sub or is that the 1% that is a real Rolex supplied superdome? If 99% are misrepresented aftermarket crystals, and someone wants a superdome, which superdome crystal do you recommend? If that is the 1% that is a Rolex superdome, what convinced you that it is Rolex? Thanks CD |

no thats an original on an unserviced never touched milsub...and its not NOS, (nor was it waterproof :))...which is what you will notice i refererd to ...the few NOS blah blah i have tried have been damned by Rolex watchmakers so i have given up. i used to get mine from the watchmakers at Rolex who had a few stashed..but always recommended not to treat them as water proof, lately if they have lost them i get the super domes for my milsubs by buying original owner unserviced 5513's and keeping the crystals when i have them upgraded to service ones ....but again purely decorative |

This is a great discussion. Thanks Jedly and everyone else who has contributed
BTW, for you real experts, what crystal is this on David's Tudor Sub? I thought it was the Tropic 19 super dome

Isn't that a 39 Jason? It's huge
I'm not an expert so don't trust me. Can anyone verify mine? I always thought it was a super dome 19. It has rounded edges and is almost flat on top. |

It's a Tropic 39 on the Tudor Snowflake, which was originally made for the SD but people have started using on subs too

clarks tropic 39
I used a clarks brand tropic 39 crystal on a 5513 sub and it passed a pressure test. it's the only new crystal I found that has the really round dome all the way to the edge like the original super-dome. I think this is a safer crystal than an NOS tropic 19 or 39. I had a tropic 19 NOS service crystal and when I put it on the case I could hear it make a small cracking sound, and it scared me a bit. The clarks crystal looks really good, I will try and post images later if anyone is interested.

Even if you get an NOS Rolex T19, don't submerge the watch. I got one for my 5512 installed by Bob Ridley, who told me that even the correct NOS Rolex superdomes can develop little cracks over time. That's why Rolex changed the style of them. Still, they look sooooo cool. Good luck.

Can't they just make a sapphire dome lens?
Would be best of both worlds. |
