..So, we're over at friends for a long overdue visit for brunch yesterday and getting caught up on old times, interests etc. including travel and he, being from Switzerland, mentions Basel in the conversation..so of course, I mention it's where Baselworld is held,- hence Rolex, etc..
I was wearing my TT DJ and he said he had one too, but it recently stopped working during their recent trip. He brought it to a local jeweler who said it wasn't worth fixing. Soo, of course I was interested. I asked him to see it..- He brought it out and its a Oyster Perpetual. I asked him if I could bring it to my watchmaker to see what he thought and he said.. 'Sure, go ahead.! So I have it..and I'll bring it in to Norbert, the German Watchmaker (who has worked on my pieces..) to see what he thinks....!! The watch Looks ok on the face of it..the face showing wear - It's been around a while and kinda shows. Pitting along the case back/lugs..and is in long need for service, especially now, since it's not running. The crown is beat up. When you pull the crown to set the time..there's about a 1/2 turn lag time before the minute hand moves.. !! There's also no resistance when winding, probably the mainspring . - for starters.. I'm not able to remove the end links to access info in between the lugs ..(not the right tools..And I don't want to muck things up..!!). No T25 or anything below the '6' on the dial..? . The end links read 4871..- .(couldn't find any info on that..). The clasp code is (what looks like a ) 'D'12 ( the D is a little beat up at the top left corner..) and has these numbers below... - 62523H.18 ?!?. ..Did some searching and found that D12 would date the clasp to 1981/Dec ..(or there abouts..). Not sure what the other numbers represent..?? . The other interesting info, or lack of, is there are no references on the movement or inside of the case back..?? - Which really has me wondering..?? I guess the jeweler didn't snug down the case back because I was able to unscrew it by hand..!! . Here's some pics of what I could get...!! . Anyone have any input, thoughts or info about this piece..? I guess we'll see what, if anything is revealed in between the lugs when I can bring it in.. . TIA folks..

This is not an authentic Rolex..
The 62523H is a part number for a TT Jubilee bracelet, which this is not either..

I don't think Rolex actually ever used plastic rings inside their watches.... I am not an expert by any means but I'm afraid the local jeweler was correct, this thing is not even worth working on... Cheap fake ;)

Are you sure he doesn't have an idea already? After all, "not worth fixing" was a more than distinct hint to the unpleasant truth...
Did he mention where he purchased that watch? |

. ..He didn't say, where he purchased it or when..but I asked him today....( when thanking them for a wonderful brunch yesterday..). . However the 'fake', it looks like it lasted him quite a while..based on the condition...!?!?!

Definitely not genuine. Even looking at the face of the watch you can tell let alone the case wear, crown and that Chinese movement

The watch maker was trying not to offend him by saying 'it wasn't worth fixing' when I suppose he could have just told him it was a fake and started a conversation that may have been very unpleasant. Now I guess it is your job. Hopefully he didn't spend very much on it.

Turns out .. it was given to him...a long time ago..Mid 80's they think.. Quote:
Probably right.. ..No.. he didn't .. as I mentioned above..- However, it served him well over the years. I don't think he's going to loose sleep over this.. Maybe time for the real McCoy....

Good eyesight.. . I concur, with all. It is fake..! . As to whether he knows or not, he didn't say. I didn't ask then and only know now, from his current wife, that he received it as a gift from someone in his past..early '80's she figures.. - So for a fake, it lasted pretty long...
