OP34 vs OP36 for mother...

Hey team,

63 year old mother. Never owned a watch like this. Just torn on size and it will be a surprise. Any thoughts? I will be choosing the blue dial.

They have the 34 in stock and the 36 will have to be ordered.

Thanks...

Need more details about your Mom. How does she dress? Size of her wrist? Some women like more feminine jewelry or smaller (small, dainty earrings, thin bracelets, etc), whereas some like bold/edgier and some in between (I’m a 59yo female) and I’m in the middle, but for a watch, always drawn to larger size —recently bought a 36MM DJ. LOVE IT! tried on 34 and felt too small.

You are right... She is typically casual but when she works (part time) at this school library she wears nicer things. She isn't flashy. She is 5'5, not as slim as she used to be. Has always worn those smaller sized watches until recently where they are slightly larger. My GF has a 36DJ.

Ok. Get her to try on GF’s DJ 36 to get a feel. Some may feel 36 is too large. I definitely thought 34 was too small for look I wanted, which was modern, but not huge like a 40-41 etc. I’m not flashy, but like nice things. I have a 30mm Tag from several years ago when the larger faces on ladies watches were starting to be popular. They didn’t have in store and jeweler had to order and were like “are you sure?” No regrets then and now.

“None of us at a certain age is as slim as we once were”-LOL . Sweet of you to want to do this for her.

Hope my comments helpful!

Have her try on th 36, a lot depends on her wrist size. My wife who has a 6" wrist has a DJ36 and it has a perfect look and fit.

Meant to mention my wrist is ~6 inch and it's a perfect fit. I'm 5'6 and not as thin as I used to me, but on the slender side.

Is it a surprise? If not, did you ask her what she wants?

It's going to be a surprise and this makes it tricky. I have the OP34 on hold until Monday. I thought about taking my mom there and pre-arranging with the sales associate to make it seem my watch is coming there for an adjustment. This will give me time to brown and try some stuff on including my mom.

Me personally would stick to 34mm and below.

Perhaps you can take your mom to the AD and say you are picking a gift for your girlfriend and want her input?

Probably my only option right now. Or say mine needs an adjustment and shop while we wait.

If she can't read without her glasses, she needs a dial with fatter hands. And neither 34 nor 36 Rolex with their stick hands are the prescription. I'd get her a different watch.

Her and I were talking watches last night which gave me a chance to show her the OP34/36. She didn't like them at all!! I almost bought one yesterday thankful I didn't.

We might like the look of a 36mm on a woman, but it is best to let her pick one out brother. She may surprise you. She will pick out something she loves, better way to go imo.

Well, thank god you didn’t buy it. She may have felt overburdened and actually scared to wear the watch that expensive. Surprises like the one you planned often are met with hostility from the surprised...I know if from experience.

good think you did that. she might have accepted the watch and never wear it do to price or styling, cause you are her son and didn't want to hurt your feelings.

Agree. She’s like that. I wanted to surprise her but not sure I can. I know she likes the DJ fluted/jubilee. So maybe re-evaluate when she’s 65.

Cheers everyone who replied here.

Okay so here is a picture of my mom wearing a blue 34 and a silver 36. If this was a Datejust I would say 36 but for her I’m thinking 34.

Thoughts team?

Also, you have the option of OP date.

I’d prefer the date my mom think it’s ugly though. And nobody has one!! She’s also not sure about the polished links...
