Rolex DeepSea

Hi All,
I am new to Rolex and I've been doing some reading lately before getting my first watch. I am interested in a Stainless Steel and finally my local dealer called and said they have a DeepSea. I went and tried on it; it is definitely a big watch but I loved it at first sight. It looks really good and I liked the history about it too.

So, now my question is, does this watch hold its value? I am planning to hold on to it and at some point give it to my son but It is a big investment and I wanted to hear from others and see what your thoughts are.

Please give me some feedback; I wanted to make sure I am making the right decision.

thank you
Jake

It probably holds value the poorest compared to the other divers , but still decent. And its wayyyyy cooler. Buy it !

Black dial will lose a bit at first, but history says it will creep up over time. In the long term, I think it gains in value.

The D-blue (or James Cameron) holds its value better and might be worth a bit over retail plus tax.

Like you said though, this is a keeper, which screams “BUY” because you like it, and it will last incredibly long, especially the 126660 with the new movement and 3235 movement with 10 year service interval.

I have to ask, if you’re going to eventually pass it down to your son then why does it matter how well it holds value?

And now the Grandfather in me, if you’re interested in handing an investment off to your kiddo then how about plopping down 10k in a well diversified mutual fund and then when he’s 18, smile as the fund should be worth 20k. Now that’s an investment. Your watch, not so much :)

Its a beautiful piece but very big and thick! Try it on first and look at it from a mirror. I actually had a chance to get one but after trying it on it was to big for my 7 inch wrist!

Where is the fun in that?!! Lol

Likely the watch will also cost 20k by the time the boy is 18 so it’s an even race

At least this way both of them get to enjoy a magnificent timepiece plus as the kid grows up and sees his dad wear it, it would make it even more special

The "right decision" is whether you like the watch.

116660 Black dial is my favourite in my whole collection .2011 and now worth 2x more in the market .Hows that for "value retention" . ...and it makes a sub feel like a toy ,not even to speak of little daytona ..

I’d get a Tag Heuer instead and save the rest of the cash. If you can’t wear that big 44mm watch you’ll look like the dorkie kid who bought the cool Nikes 4 sizes too big because they were on sale!

Thanks everyone for your feedback. This is a humongous watch and looks like it is too big for my wrist. I guess I will wait for another one. I want to get a new one and but I am not interested in paying anything more than the retail price.

I am really interested in an OysterSteel Cosmograph Daytona, Skydweller or a SubMariner but I just can't find it anywhere. I started the shopping around 2 months ago and this was the first call I got from the Local Retail Store.

If you guys have any suggestions on the store for the availability of one of these watches let me know.

thank again, everyone!!

The DSSD is probably one of the best 'bang for your buck' models in the Rolex Professional lineup. Its a thick watch and takes an ideal wrist size to look right, hence it tends to gravitate towards a more niche market. Have had mine for years...love it !!

It’s more of a niche watch IMO. Nothing wrong with that, but it wouldn’t be a daily wearer for me, and it may or may not be wearable or appealing to your son down the road.

I’d definitely buy it if you want a cool dive watch, but only if you’re going to wear and enjoy it, value retention aside.

Rolex chronographs and divers are about as safe as you can get.

To big for my taste. It shouts "trying too hard" for me. Unless you are 6ft 6 and weight in at about 300LBS

Trying too hard? But that's the whole point of this watch. It's a 4 km depth rating.

Good advice.....this really does feel big on the wrist compared to other SS sports....probably not for everyone?

I'd look into a Sea-Dweller 116600 (SD4K). 40mm case won't wear as large as the Deep Sea. You're getting the Sea-Dweller heritage with a few other things that make it a special piece in the Rolex lineage. Take a few minutes to read up on it and I think you might find it worth your while to find a nice example out there...

I agree that it all depends on your built. But if you can wear it, it is awesome. Don't think it looks "trying too hard" if that's the case

Agree, it does fit your arm IMO, but many I see with these look like they are wearing the wheel off of a truck

those who choose deepsea have already had several submariners,
it's a precise choice, I don't think it's your case.
is the best Rolex in production for me

Depends on what you think of as holding value. If your question is whether it is going to go up in value substantially, probably not. If you're asking whether if push comes to shove and you absolutely have to get rid of it will you get most of your money back and not feel like you threw money down the drain the answer is yes it holds value well.

That's exactly how to look at it.

I never buy a watch with the intention to sell, but at the same time I always consider what would happen if I had to sell,

Back in 2011 my city was pretty much destroyed by an Earthquake, and I had started a business just before it happened - at least a year with zero income followed...We got by, but I sold some watches to help and since that point I have always considered resale value and could I get most of my money back relatively quickly.

I own a Deepsea, and I am very very happy with the watch and it's potential resale - I don't intend to ever have to sell it, but you never know what is around the corner....

And for those who say the DSSD is too big, I do understand, but try weearing it for 3 hours, and all of that goes away entirely and you are just left with the impression of a supremely comfortable watch that has fantastic presence on the wrist.
