The photos you posted area a perfect two watch combo. My only suggestion is that I wouldn't get the DJ with a black dial. So many great dial options especially on the 36mm. Get something other than black because if you do add the explorer or some other steel sports, the dial will most likely be black.

I owned both at the same time.

I still have my DJ.

That’s my vote.

One Watch Collection: Explorer or Datejust

When I first bought the Explorer back in 2015, I liked it a lot. It’s a really nice watch to have.
My DJ36 is my latest watch in my collection and it is one of my most beautiful pieces I have. Silver dial, Roman numerals with jubilee bracelet and of course fluted bezel. Can’t beat that as the ultimate classic watch.
IMO, the Explorer can’t complete with such a beauty.
Check below my DJ36 and yes I like it much more than the Explorer and made it obsolete in my collection.
Cheers.

I'd go Datejust route too.
I'm thinking of getting the silver oyster fluted after just getting this one recently. They are a lovely watch.

Explorer all day everyday all things the same, but a DJ2 fluted bezel on a jubilee bracelet. That’s a different ballgame

Are you a DJ kinda guy, or an Exp kinda guy? They are different, though the watches, like the guys, can do both as required.

I would go with the DJ to commemorate your wedding. The reason is you can buy a DJ brand new at an AD with your name on it.

Then down the road add an exp1. Problem solved.

It doesn’t matter which one you choose because if you’re going to use the term “collection” it will be your FIRST, not your last.

Make a plan to get more than one.

I bought my DJ 116200 back in 2012
Since then I've owned the 114270 twice and the 214270 mk2 as well.
The Explorer's are long gone, my DJ shook them off pretty easily in the end. The Expy's are absolutely gorgeous watches, but the Datejust is like a perfect watch to me.
I also can't deny that the solid new bracelets and Easylink on the DJ are huge advantages over the super light feeling old Expy bracelets.

I was pretty set on the Explorer since it is under the radar and I didn't want to it to yell Rolex, then when I went to check out the 39mm version, I tried on a datejust and was surprised how much I liked it. The watch will commemorate getting married, so it would never get sold and rarely leave my wrist. I have tried both on and liked both. I know I've picked out two very different watches here but I wanted to get y'all's options. Thanks!

While both are really nice watches I would go with the Datejust. It can be a dress or sport watch. My first Rolex was a 16233 TT Datejust.

Get the DJ, best Rolex as a one watch only! 36mm is the way to go, new one comes with 70hrs power reserve...

I love the Sub, but I think the Explorer edges it out for a one watch collection.
