One Watch Collection: Explorer or Datejust
DJ. 36mm. With an Oyster bracelet you can wear the watch with practically everything. The new model run is especially nice with the latest 70 hr movement. The new dials that removed the track marks outside the indexes give it a retro look. Really nice watch. As a matter of fact I liked it so much, I put my money where my mouth is...
The 36 mm is an icon. As much as I wanted to like the DJ41. It wasn’t the original classic. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The Explorer has the Mercedes Hand and lumed second hand whereas the DJ has a date. If night legibility is your thing then the Exp otherwise the DJ.

I struggled with this same question and ultimately the Explorer won out. To me it really is the "perfect" watch and far less common than a Datejust.

Fluted bezel on the datejust is a little too flashy for me. I'd go Explorer all the way

I've got a fluted DJ on jubilee with a blue dial (36mm). It's amazing and the perfect everyday watch for my work lifestyle. I'm considering a 114270 for weekend/casual life now, as I think the 214270 is too large on my wrist for a 3-hander.
My feeling is that you should get the DJ for your wedding watch. Dress it up a little (fluted, jubilee) and then later consider adding a casual/dressed-down explorer. |

The Explorer...steeped in history, flies under the radar and will hold value better through the years.

Explorer, as I´m clumsy and reckon it will take rough treatment better. IMO it would be a shame to mistreat a beautiful watch like the DJ...

As your future bride. Might as well set the precedent now.

I'd go with the datejust. I owned a 36mm Explorer and still own a datejust. The Explorer is a very nice watch, but it just felt a little too small for a sports watch. The datejust is also 36mm but I think the dressier look works in that size.

That's what I figured. She said the DJ looks like an old man watch and the Explorer is too much like my current watch, Tag CK1110-0. She has a point with both having Mercedes hands and black dials. Not much help though haha.

Na, I don't live there by choice. The Air Force stationed me there.

Also, it’s definitely not an old man watch - get it in 41mm with an oyster bracelet and there’s simply no way the watch would be perceived as such. I don’t see the appeal of the explorer 1 as a one and only Rolex. It’s an oyster perpetual with different dial and different hands for an extra $1000 beyond the OP, and in my view the OP does double duty (dress up or dress down) better than the explorer can. Explorer is nice to add if you have other different things, but certainly not the pick of the masses for a one and only. There’s a reason why the DJ is the best selling Rolex, despite what the forums here would have you believe. |

EXP1 39 without a doubt. I have 20+ watches from Tudor to Patek but my exp gets the most wristtime by far. Just perfect in its simplicity. Wear it on the beach or with a suit. It does it all. DJ is a great watch but it (especially the TT 36mm models) does have a bit of an "old man" vibe to it.

As an everyday, I would go with the DJ because it has a date complication. I’ve owned both (five digit references) and I eventually sold the Explorer.
Just my two cents, on an oyster, I would consider a smooth bezel. It gives it the body line of an Explorer, since you like it as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I think I got my collection messed up. DJ41, smooth bezel and oyster bracelet is my daily and I occasionally indulge into some serious manual labor. Have a GMT and another TT DJ for dress up.

DJ41. Get the black sticks/baton dial, smooth bezel and oyster bracelet. Although, PCL on the bracelet is not totally under the radar, it is in my opinion better option than the Explorer.
You get used to the PCL very quickly and there is hardly anyone who looks at your watch anyways. |
