Is gifting a “used” watch socially acceptable?

I’m wondering if you guys think presenting a used watch as a gift to someone is acceptable.
And if you think it relevant, would the occasion matter? Besides the holidays coming up, we have birthdays, a law school and a college graduation, and a wedding.
Personally, I would appreciate it. But I can also see the flip side.
Thank you!

Gifting a used vintage watch is fine. I would never gift a used modern ref though without the recipient’s approval.

Depends.
Gifting an used Invicta to a friend seems odd imo
Gifting an used Explorer to my nephew is ok imo

I've gifted Rolexes and Tudors from my personal collection. I think it's a more personal gesture, giving the receiver a more personal connection to you

Who wouldn't want a Rolex as a gift, new or used, makes no difference. Generally, the gift-giver and recipient know each other which makes the gift very special.

Somewhat silly question to me as who would not want a 'new to them' Rolex? Especially if got an ultrasonic bath before presentation???

Seriously though, I think it depends on the person receiving it.

I can see how someone might be offended to receive a “used” gift, regardless of what it is.

But if you’re giving them a watch, you probably know them well to know if they’ll take offense or not.

It is, but only if it verifiably belonged to Paul Newman, Steve Mcqueen or Marlon Brando.

I think if they are into watches they would be ok with it, but if it was just a random gift to them I could see that they might find it weird. Like if it was a used Sub, they'd wonder why you didn't just buy them a new one, completely oblivious to the situation we're currently dealing with.

I think it is but with the proviso that you saved some money and the recipient would appreciate that saving, otherwise it can look cheap and then it's best to get it new, esp if it is a luxury like a Rolex. I'm in a similar position with my Mum, I want to get her a Cartier for Xmas and I'd like to do the whole AD thing, but she is not really bothered and if I can save a grand or so by buying it almost new then she would prefer that.

Absolutely........When son #1 graduated college, he got my TT Sub. When son#2 graduated from college he got my SS Daytona. When daughter graduated from college she got a Brand new Cartier Roadster with the salmon dial.

Each one of them cherish the gift.

Actually the "gifting" was a big reason I got into watches. When my father passed away he left me nothing of sentimental value. He left me lots of other things I will never forget, but he never bought or wore jewelry. Not even a wedding band. So I wanted to change this for my kids. It was a Grand Slam.

If the watch is used by you or a loved one, then there’s certainly some history and it makes a meaningful gift. If the watch is used and you just bought it off here or eBay, I think that wouldn’t make a good gift, especially if the recipient is not a wis.

I'm sure most of us here wouldn't have a problem with it, but I can see how someone with only a casual interest in watches might feel differently.

I have a client whose wife gifted him a used 200m submariner with plexi crystal in the early 1980’s for his birthday. She paid $1k for it and he still wears it everyday. He seems to be quite happy with it whenever I ask to buy it lol

If not vintage, then I would not unless the person agreed or wanted that particular watch.

I have gifted a few gently used Seiko divers to some exceptional young cycling teammates for high school graduation. Not inappropriately expensive, excellent condition, and they know my love of watches.
Seeing them come home from college wearing it is very cool.
